First year of 996 better than expected
"This car is far better than many initial reviews. The so called purists were a bit upset with the design change and move to a water cooled engine. That couple with the now notorious IMS bearing issue gave this series a bad name. The aftermarket for these cars allows the opportunity for people who only dreamed of owning a Porsche to now own one. Replace the IMS bearing and service the car regularly and you should be fine. My only reason for not giving a 5 star rating is the IMS bearing issue and the non-Porsche like cheapened interior."
Interior

Too much cheap plastic and flimsy materials

Classic Porsche, even with the newer body style 996.

Where can you buy a 996 Carrera that new was $62K+ for less than $18K 20 years later with less than 75K miles?

Best 911
"Best 911 of the 5 911's i've owned. Great driver's car. Very underrated by the Porsche gurus. Car was a total rebuild; motor, tranny, suspension, paint etc... etc... Blast to drive and enjoy !!!"
Interior

Interior was perfect even with 137,000 miles on the clock. No rattles...

Not made to be family friendly. It's not an SUV....

Parts are not cheap. Access in engine bay can be a real headache. Not cheap to maintain...

1997 911
"For a 23 year old car with relatively low miles, the car is in great shape. I have replaced some things, principally cosmetic but also brought it up to its proper mechanical condition. After owning two newer Porsche models, I’m enjoying a manual gearbox, smaller size and simpler interface. Why? Because it’s more fun! "

Can be very pricey to maintain. Verify major maintenance was done else negotiate, negotiate!

It's very strong with an New upgraded IMS Bearing and Clutch Job with H.D. parts done in June 2016. My main reason for purchasing the car.

Notice an oil leak. It was one seal ($5.95) so I replaced all seals and spark plug connectors along with new plugs and oil change (synthetic oil) parts and labor less than $400

"Beautiful Mirage Metallic color, 6 speed manual car in excellent condition. It has been garaged and well maintained, so the paint and interior are in excellent condition. These cars really handle & stop well. If you are interested in getting a 911, I think the 996's are the best value. Just make sure you have a service history!"
