"Bought it for its AWD, solid feel, good reviews, and reasonably high seating. Use it for city and rural driving in northern New England. However, I have since discovered that 2001-2003 RAV4 had a defect in the design and/or construction of the ECM (Electronic Control Module) so that many of these cars with automatic transmission had a shifting problem that resulted from ECM defect. This problem did not appear in this car until after we bought it at 118,000 miles. Others had the problem at later or earlier mileages. The defect can result in damage to the transmission itself because it is not receiving the correct instructions from the ECM. Before buying one, check with Toyota to see if the ECM has been replaced. Just reprogramming (e.g. in 2007) is not sufficient."
