The redesigned 2005 Ford Mustang incorporates cues from previous generations in a muscular package that’s enjoyable to drive. With two potent engines, unique styling and sporty driving characteristics, the Mustang is a modern interpretation of the iconic classic.
Ford offers the Mustang in four trims: V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe and GT Premium. Classified as a sports car, the Mustang can seat up to four and is only available in rear-wheel drive. A V6 engine and a manual transmission are standard. A high-performance V8 and an automatic transmission are also available.
With its broad shoulders, imposing grille, iconic Mustang badge and beefy front fascia, it’s hard to miss this sports car on the road. The Mustang’s sloping roofline gives it an athletic look, and the squared-off rear end and three-bar taillights offer some retro styling cues that hearken back to the heyday of the Mustang.
Standard exterior features on the Mustang include power side-view mirrors, a rear window defroster, variable-interval windshield wipers, 16-inch wheels and a single exhaust outlet. A dual-exhaust system, 17-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, fog lights and performance tires are available.
While the Mustang’s exterior gets a bold, new take, the interior gets some retro cues. Large, easy-to-read gauges make up the instrument cluster and mimic the classic Mustang.
The round, three-pronged steering wheel also looks like it was taken straight off a classic Mustang. Materials and ergonomics are on par with what competitors offer.
A four-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, a tilt steering wheel and cloth upholstery are standard. Available equipment includes a six-way power driver’s seat, leather-trimmed upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and satin-aluminum trim.
The Mustang is offered with two powerful engines. The base engine is a 4.0-liter V6 that produces 210 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. If you’re looking for true sports car performance, Ford also offers a 4.6-liter V8 that makes 300 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard for both engines, while a five-speed automatic transmission is available. Rear-wheel drive is standard.
EPA Fuel economy ratings for the Mustang are 17/26 mpg city/highway.
For a sports car, the Mustang comes with a competitive list of technology features. Standard equipment includes illuminated entry, remote keyless entry, a safety belt reminder system, two power outlets and a four-speaker audio system. A 10-speaker audio system, a six-disc CD player, MP3 capability and MyColor illuminated gauges are optional.
