With the 2007 Ford Edge, the automaker has incorporated everything that’s good with an SUV and given it the same agility as a sedan. The Edge has a similar cargo capacity to Ford’s larger offerings, while having better handling characteristics. Though it has an athletic design, some competitors are more enjoyable to drive. Still, the Edge manages to find the sweet spot between being comfortable and sporty.
The 2007 Ford Edge is a midsize crossover that seats five. It’s offered in SE, SEL and SEL Plus trims. A V6 engine pairs with an automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available.
The Edge is an all-new vehicle for 2007.
In pictures, the Edge comes off as small, but the SUV is larger than it lets on. Its sleek, curvy blueprint gives it car-like qualities. A large chrome grille with three horizontal bars sits between two F-shaped headlights. A chunky grille leads into a thick front fascia with a slim rectangular air intake. Wide fender flares and black trim pieces along the side provide some ruggedness. At the back, a raked rear windshield and thick C-pillar add athletic touches.
The Edge comes with black door handles, a black rear spoiler, dual exhaust tips, power mirrors and 17-inch wheels. Optional features for the entry-level trim include black roof-rack side rails and automatic headlights with wiper activation.
The Edge’s cabin is reminiscent of Ford’s larger and more rugged machines. Ford has taken a utilitarian approach to the design of the interior. A straightforward center console has large buttons and dials, which make it easy to control the audio system and air conditioning. Passengers enjoy ample room, even in the rear seats. Materials are high-end and attractive. Cargo capacity is excellent for the segment. The Edge can hold up to 32.1 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. Fold those down, and that measure expands to 69.6 cubic feet.
Standard features include manual air conditioning, cloth bucket seats, power windows and door locks, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column and reclining rear seats. Optional features include a rear cargo management system, all-weather floor mats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Under the hood is a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed through the front wheels; all-wheel drive is optional.
With its powerful V6 and midsize body, the Edge isn’t the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the segment. It achieves up to 16/23 mpg city/highway.
The Edge is based on a platform similar to Ford’s midsize sedan, which gives the SUV its athletic ability. Its tall body holds it back from being as agile as a sports car, but the Edge can take corners more adeptly than the majority of its competitors. Power is more than adequate, but the Edge’s high level of refinement is what’s noteworthy. The Edge’s all-wheel-drive system isn’t meant for off-roading, but providing drivers with more grip in inclement weather, which it does well. Around town and on the highway, the Edge is quiet and enjoyable to drive.
The Edge doesn’t come with a lot of technology features. A four-speaker AM/FM stereo system with a CD player is the sole standard offering. Options for the base trim include satellite radio, a six-disc CD changer, MP3 capability and a keyless entry pad.
