Premium appeal and a purposeful road presence are among the highlights for the 2009 Ford Edge. It offers a little more of everything than an entry-level SUV, including more power, more luxury and a bigger footprint. The Edge, however, remains fun to drive since it’s not as massive as the usual three-row entries.
The 2009 Ford Edge is the brand’s midsize two-row SUV. It seats five. This year, a new Sport trim joins the previously available SE, SEL and Limited models. A V6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available. Top rivals for the Edge include the Nissan Murano and, in later years, the Chevrolet Blazer and Honda Passport.
Other changes for 2009 include the addition of blind spot mirrors and a post-crash alert system. A voice-activated navigation system becomes optional.
With its wide-looking proportions, the 2009 Ford Edge seems to take up more room on the road than others in the segment. The same design cues give the Edge a planted stance, as if it were carved from some exotic, super-dense metal. A sophisticated three-blade grille, flanked by wing-shaped headlights, creates a sophisticated look at the front.
Standard features include halogen headlamps, a rear spoiler, rocker moldings, dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets, power-adjustable mirrors with built-in blind-spot mirrors and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The Edge Sport checks in with standard equipment such as unique fascias, body-color aero pieces and wider-diameter exhaust outlets. Options include automatic headlights, fog lights, a dual-pane panoramic moonroof, heated mirrors, a power liftgate, roof rails and 18-, 20- and 22-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The Ford Edge provides a spacious upscale cabin with more legroom and cargo space than its competitors. The interior design is clean and modern, with a smooth dashboard that’s split by a tech-inspired center stack. In the second row, 60/40-split folding rear seats are standard, and there’s 32.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind them. The Edge provides 69 cubic feet of storage with its back seats folded.
Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery, lumbar adjustment for the driver’s seat, reclining second-row seats, air conditioning, power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a multifunction steering wheel. The Edge is further available with leather-trimmed seats, heated six-way power-adjustable front seats, quick-release second-row seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls.
The 2009 Ford Edge comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. The powerplant is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive in the Edge’s standard configuration. An all-wheel-drive system is optional. The Edge can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
With its standard powertrain, the Edge has fuel economy ratings of 17/24 mpg city/highway.
Other standard features include anti-lock brakes, stability control and traction control. The Sport trim, with a performance-tuned suspension and steering hardware, provides a competitive Edge against many mainstream SUVs.
The 2009 Edge’s standard audio system bundles an AM/FM stereo, a CD player and auxiliary input jack. Infotainment options include a nine-speaker premium audio system, a six-disc CD changer, a display-based navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, a 10 GB hard drive and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with two headrest-mounted 7-inch displays.
Rear parking sensors are available for driver assistance.
