The 2011 Jeep Liberty hails from the brand’s first generation of modern crossover-style SUVs. But, unlike more mainstream mall-crawlers, the Liberty can be equipped with serious hardware for leaving the pavement. In fact, it’s capable enough to earn Jeep’s Trail Rated designation for off-road performance.
Along with the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass, the Liberty is one of the brand’s three compact SUVs for the 2011 model year. The Liberty seats five. It’s offered in Sport, Renegade and Limited trim levels. The standard powertrain includes a V6 engine, a four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Jeep supplies two optional four-wheel-drive setups.
The 2011 Jeep Liberty gets a new standard steering wheel with built-in audio controls. There are new options as well, such as a touchscreen-based audio system. Two new appearance packages are available. The 70th Anniversary Edition celebrates the Jeep brand’s seventh decade with exclusive painted-and-polished 18-inch wheels, bright body-side moldings, Berber floormats and leather seats in Dark Olive and Slate. With the Jet Appearance package, you’ll get 20-inch polished wheels, chrome exterior accents and blacked-out headlamps.
The 2011 Jeep Liberty is like a classic four-door Jeep Wrangler that’s had its roughest edges smoothed down. Jeep even gives the Liberty a seven-slot grille and a design cue that seems inspired by the 1986-1995 Wrangler: squared-off headlights. So the Liberty is immediately recognizable as a tough SUV, but it avoids looking like a grown-up toy.
Halogen headlights, heated power-adjustable mirrors, a flip-up tailgate window and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are standard. Options include fog lamps, roof rails, gray fender flares and 17-, 18- and 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Two sunroof systems are available. Along with a traditional setup, the Liberty offers a Sky Slider fabric panel that can retract nearly the whole length of the roof.
A straightforward dashboard keeps things simple in the cabin, with sculpting that might remind you of the Liberty’s prominent front bumper. Other blocky cues include the rectangular shapes in the center stack. Jeep provides standard 60/40-split folding seats in the back. You can take advantage of 26.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind those seats and 62.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Standard features include cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power accessories, cruise control and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel with integrated audio controls. The Liberty also is available with leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a two-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The 2011 Jeep Liberty comes with a 3.7-liter V6 and rear-wheel drive. Rivals such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 pack four-cylinder engines with front-wheel drive. The Liberty’s standard engine is more powerful, too, with 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough output for a 5,000-pound tow rating. Four-wheel drive is available with either a part- or full-time transfer case. All powertrains are matched with a standard four-speed automatic transmission.
Relying on its standard powertrain, the Liberty earns fuel economy ratings of 16/22 mpg city/highway.
Base models come with an AM/FM stereo with six speakers, a CD player, an auxiliary input jack and satellite radio. Jeep offers options such as a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth for hands-free calling, navigation, a 30 GB hard drive, a DVD player, a 368-watt audio amplifier, eight Infinity speakers with a subwoofer and rear parking sensors.
