The 2012 Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover SUV that can be configured to seat five or seven passengers. It’s sold with either a gas or electric powertrain. Gas-only models come in base, Sport and Limited trims, and the EV is offered in a single trim. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available.
For the 2012 model year, the RAV4 adds a new optional touch-screen audio system.
The 2012 RAV4’s sheet metal looks sturdy and confident. In front, a standard four-cornered black grille sits beneath a sculpted hood. The crossover’s profile features a steeply ascending beltline and prominent wheel wells.
Base models come with halogen headlights, LED taillights, power-adjustable side mirrors, black exterior door handles and 16-inch wheels. The options list includes automatic headlights, fog lamps, heated power-folding side mirrors with integrated turn signals, color-keyed exterior door handles, a power sunroof and 17- or 18-inch wheels.
The RAV4’s cabin is all about practicality and comfort. The clean, straightforward design features a two-level dash and a bold center stack. Base models seat five, and an optional 50/50-split folding third-row seat boosts passenger capacity to seven. The first two rows are reasonably spacious, but the third row is best suited for children. The RAV4 provides 12.3 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row. Both gas-only and electric models offer 37.2 cubic feet of capacity behind the second row and an impressive 73 cubic feet behind the first row.
Standard equipment includes power windows and door locks, air conditioning, cloth upholstery, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, a four-way manually adjustable front passenger seat and a 60/40-split second-row seat that folds, slides and reclines. The range of available equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
RAV4 drivers enjoy carlike handling, and the optional V6 delivers peppy performance. Gas-only models come with either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed automatic, and the electrified variant is governed by a one-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
The standard powerplant is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 179 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. The second engine is a 3.5-liter V6 good for 269 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque. WIth the electrified RAV4, an electric motor provides a total output of 154 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
With the gas-only powertrain, the RAV4 achieves EPA-rated fuel economy of up to 21/28 mpg city/highway. The RAV4 EV gets a combined mileage of 76 MPGe, and it has a range of 103 miles.
When properly equipped, the RAV4 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
There’s a pleasing selection of tech features offered with the RAV4. Base models come with a six-speaker sound system, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, an iPod/USB interface and Bluetooth phone and audio capability.
The range of optional equipment includes navigation, a 6.1-inch touch screen, satellite radio, HD radio, keyless entry and ignition, real-time traffic information and smartphone app connectivity.
