The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro is a modern muscle car that puts performance and old-school styling first. With its herculean powertrain, the Camaro shines at being driven every day. The Camaro’s design won’t be to everyone’s liking, but the coupe is one heck of a performance bargain.
The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro seats four. It’s available in seven trims: 1LS, 2LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS, 2SS and ZL1. Powertrain options range from a V6 engine to a large, supercharged V8. The engines can be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. In true muscle car fashion, the Camaro is rear-wheel drive only.
For 2013, the Camaro gets a few upgrades. A Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with navigation is optional. Camaros with manual transmissions come with hill-start assist, SS trims get electric power steering, and there’s a new 1LE package that bridges the gap between the range-topping ZL1 and road-oriented SS trims.
The Camaro manages to beautifully straddle the line between retro and modern. The slim grille, round foglights and circular headlights give the Camaro a menacing look. The wide fenders at the front blend into the tall hood, providing a classic muscle car look. At the back, the coupe has throwback rectangular taillights, a prominent diffuser and a chunky bumper.
Standard exterior features include 18-inch wheels, a blade spoiler, automatic headlights, power mirrors and daytime running lights. Among the optional features are a ground effects package, a sunroof, a high-wing spoiler, 21-inch wheels and various types of stripes.
Unlike the Camaro’s exterior that ushers the muscle car into the modern era, the interior of the coupe is still a little dated. Hard plastics are present throughout, and the car’s blueprint is retro. The good news is that the gauges are easy to read and the buttons are relatively simple to master. While the Camaro offers seating for four, the back seats are best left for children. The front seats, though, are spacious.
On the inside, the Camaro comes with manual air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and cloth seats. Optional features include heated seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and leather-trimmed seats.
Three engine choices are available. All powerplants are paired with either a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. The base Camaro is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates 323 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The next step up is a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Going with the automatic transmission reduces the output to 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. The top-dog Camaro ZL1 is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that’s good for 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to its muscular engine, the ZL1 can get to 60 mph in four seconds and has a top speed of 184 mph.
With its sporty powertrain, the Camaro is quick in a straight line and, depending on what trim you go with, extremely capable on a track. The SS trims, which are powered by a 6.2-liter V8 are notably performance-oriented. Consumers looking for a pure performance vehicle will naturally gravitate towards the ZL1, which is a beast.
As far as technology features go, the Camaro comes with OnStar, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, keyless entry, two power outlets and an auxiliary jack. Aside from MyLink and navigation, notable optional equipment includes a 7-inch touch screen, OnStar services, a Boston Acoustics premium audio system and a USB connection.
