The Ford Mustang is America’s pony car, long prized for its handsome looks, performance and rich history. This rear-wheel-drive sport coupe and convertible does battle with the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, and it manages to outsell both most years.
Completely redesigned in 2005, the fifth-generation Ford Mustang comes in six grades: V6, V6 Premium, GT, GT Premium, Boss 302 and Shelby GT500. A standard V6 and a trio of V8 engines along manual and automatic transmissions define the 2013 Mustang.
Design changes mark the 2013 Mustang, including refreshed front and rear fascias. Upgraded audio systems, a more powerful 5.0-liter V8 and a new supercharger with the Shelby GT500 round out the modifications.
A long hood, short rear deck and a sloping roofline mark every Mustang coupe. Hardtop roofs are standard; a glass roof or a soft-top convertible are optional.
The front fascia features a gaping grille, evenly divided by upper and lower sections. Round headlamps hearken to an earlier era; LED accent lights acknowledge that this is a new model.
A sharply defined hood, strong shoulders and distinct character lines add definition. The rear fascia features sequential tail lamps and a pair of exhaust ports. Trim variation includes body skirting, special paint schemes, a rear spoiler and other enhancements. Standard 17-inch painted aluminum wheels give way to numerous 18- and 19-inch alloy wheel styles elsewhere. HID headlamps, fog lamps, splash guards and grille inserts are available.
The 2013 Mustang offers a 2+2 layout with bolstered bucket seats in the front and half-bucket seats in the back. The Mustang’s sporty interior includes a four-gauge instrument cluster, standard cloth seats, soft-touch materials across the dashboard and hard plastics on the doors.
Standard equipment includes power windows and door locks, a tilt steering column, air conditioning and steering wheel-mounted cruise control. Upgrades bring in leather trim, Recaro seats, a unique gauge cluster, ambient lighting, heated seats and sport pedals.
The coupe offers 12.3 cubic feet of trunk space; the convertible measures just 9.7 cubic feet.
Multiple powertrain choices provide Mustang fans with a wide range of models to consider. A 3.7-liter V6 engine generating 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque is standard, and comes with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
The standard 5.0-liter V8 makes 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. A high-performance version of this same engine generates 444 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Manual and automatic transmission choices are available.
The top-of-the-range Shelby GT350 comes equipped with a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 with 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Ford pairs this engine with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Optional performance packages add a limited-slip rear differential, performance tires, Brembo brakes and a track pack.
Fuel economy ranges from 19/30 mpg city/highway for the V6 automatic to 15/24 mpg city/highway for the supercharged V8.
All 2013 Mustangs offer Bluetooth, a USB port, an auxiliary audio jack and an audio system with a CD player. Audio upgrades bring in satellite radio and an eight-speaker Shaker audio package with two subwoofers.
Except in the base model, Ford’s SYNC in-vehicle, voice-activated connectivity system comes standard. Also available is a rearview camera.
