The 2013 Nissan Maxima combines athleticism and luxury in a way that’s expected of a brand’s flagship sedan. The Maxima also offers consumers with a little more flair, with sharp styling and unique exterior touches. Commuters would enjoy the Maxima’s emphasis on driving pleasure.
The Nissan Maxima is a full-size sedan that seats five. The sedan is available in two trims: 3.5 S and 3.5 SV. The sole powertrain for the Maxima is a V6 engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is standard.
The Maxima gets revised options packages and a Pearl White exterior paint option for 2013.
Nissan describes the Maxima’s body styling as “liquid motion,” and it makes sense, as the sedan looks like it’s moving even when standing still. The front end features C-shaped headlights, a low-set rectangular grille and a curvaceous hood. With its broad shoulders, the Maxima is reminiscent of a high-performance sports car. The rear end of the Maxima is just as curvy as the rest of the sedan. A sweeping trunk lid sits on top of shapely taillights and two large exhaust pipes.
The Maxima comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, automatic on/off headlights and LED taillights. Moving up to a higher model brings the option of 19-inch wheels, high-intensity-discharge headlights, a rear spoiler, a dark-finish sport grille, smoked headlights, heated exterior mirrors, auto-dimming exterior mirrors and a dual-panel moonroof.
The sheet metal of the Maxima may be sporty, but the interior goes for an uncluttered, upscale look. The front seats provide a generous amount of space while being supportive and comfortable. The center console is laid out well and wouldn’t be out of place in a high-end luxury vehicle. Upscale materials provide some character, while build quality is on par with rivals.
Standard interior features include dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming interior mirror, power door locks and windows, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a four-way power passenger’s seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Higher trims can be equipped with a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, rear-window power sunshade, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
Only one engine is offered with the Maxima, a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 290 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a CVT that sends power to the front wheels. With the sporty drivetrain, fuel economy lags behind the competition. The Maxima gets an EPA-estimated 19/26 mpg city/highway.
While the Maxima doesn’t produce sports car-besting power, the sedan manages to feel athletic and sure-footed on the road. The sedans firm suspension setup aids the Maxima in tackling corners while smoothing out rough roads. The vehicle also handles the open highway well.
Standard tech features include Bluetooth connectivity, a six-CD changer, an eight-speaker audio system and an auxiliary jack. Higher trims come with a 7-inch display, a Bose audio system, satellite radio and a USB connection.
