The revamped 2013 Toyota RAV4 brings a more aggressive look, as well as better fuel economy and a wider array of technology features. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is the RAV4’s generous amount of interior room.
The 2013 Toyota RAV4 seats five. It’s available in three trims: LE, XLE and Limited. It’s powered by a four-cylinder engine that’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. An all-electric RAV4 EV is also available in select markets. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available.
The RAV4 is all new for 2013.
The 2013 Toyota RAV4’s design manages to achieve strong proportions while conveying its agile and fun character. The sheet metal boasts a sloping roofline and an aggressive character line. Aggressively sculpted front and rear fenders, and boldly proportioned taillights, define the RAV4’s athletic presence. At the rear, a roof-hinged liftgate replaces a side-hinged rear door that stored the spare tire on the 2012 model.
Base models ride on 17-inch steel wheels, and automatic headlights, power-folding mirrors and rear privacy glass also are standard. Higher trims bring in 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated side mirrors, roof rails and a sunroof.
The dash panel of the 2013 RAV4 is asymmetrical and driver-focused, with all buttons and controls within easy reach. Passenger-side sculpting creates a sense of airy spaciousness. There’s a mix of hard plastics and soft-touch surfaces. The front seats are supportive yet comfortable. Legroom is generous, as is the cargo capacity. Behind the second row, there’s 38.4 cubic feet of storage space. That expands to 73.3 cubic feet when the 60/40-split second row is folded. The result is one of the roomiest cargo areas in the segment.
Standard equipment includes power windows and door locks, air conditioning and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Moving up the trim line adds dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter. An eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, heated front seats and leather upholstery are also offered.
Under the hood of the 2013 Toyota RAV4 is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine good for 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard across the lineup, as is front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available. Fuel economy tops out at an EPA-estimated 24/31 mpg city/highway. That’s for front-wheel-drive models.
The behind-the-wheel experience of the 2013 RAV4 is far superior to that of the previous generation. It handles quite well and provides responsive steering. With the exception of the Limited, which comes with 18-inch wheels, the RAV4’s ride is smooth and supple. Even at highway speeds, the cabin stays hushed.
The 2013 RAV4 starts off with a basic level of infotainment content. A rearview camera, Bluetooth and a six-speaker sound system with a 6-inch touch screen, CD player, auxiliary audio jack and iPod/USB interface are standard. A navigation system, satellite and HD radio, and voice controls are available as part of a package. An 11-speaker JBL audio system is optional on the trim-topping RAV4 Limited.

"I love this car! The handling is amazing, the seats are comfortable! This car was a friends car and it was clean, clean, clean! The height to get into the car is great for people with bad knees. The handling is great! If you want a dependable auto, buy a Toyota, they go forever."
Seats are comfortable and the back seat floor is a continuous space!
A couple of small dings from living in the city, but nothing noticeable.
"Love it. Great mileage for an SUB (26.8 average). Rides nice and I hope to get a couple hundred thousand miles like I did on my last one!"
