A high-tech, high-performance sports car, the 2014 Audi R8 provides dramatic design cues, a mid-engine layout, incredible driving dynamics and many premium amenities.
In addition to coupe and convertible body styles, Audi offers the R8 in V8, V10 and V10 Plus trims. Those names correspond to each trim’s standard engine. All-wheel drive is standard across the R8 lineup.
The V10 Plus stands out as a new trim for this year, and other fresh highlights for the R8 include a seven-speed automatic transmission, redesigned LED headlights and taillights, new in-cabin accent themes and restyled wheels.
The R8 showcases a distinctly Audi-esque interpretation of the classic supercar design, with compact dimensions, a low-slung, streamlined shape and signature “sideblades” behind the door openings. Also on board are standard LED headlights, taillights and mirror-mounted turn-signal indicators; the standard mirrors are heated as well. The R8 rides on standard 19-inch alloy wheels, and all trims come standard with aero-enhancing features such as a front lip spoiler, an adaptive rear spoiler and a rear air diffuser.
Available content for the R8 extends to multiple 19-inch alloy wheel designs, power-folding exterior mirrors and real carbon-fiber body details. Additionally, the open-air R8 Spyder, sold in V8 and V10 trims, has a power-operated soft top that can be raised or lowered with the car in motion, at speeds of up to 31 mph.
Highlighted by a traditional coupe interior that provides seating for two, the R8 delivers a sharply driver-focused environment with a compact center-stack arrangement and a bootless, industrial-look shift lever. The standard multi-function steering wheel has a tilt-and-telescoping column and flat-bottomed, racing-style design that adds to the athletic look of the car. Meanwhile, LED ambient light, aluminum door-sill inlays and automatic climate control are further upscale cues that are standard in the R8. As for the standard seating, both driver and passenger enjoy 12-way power-adjustable and heated seats with leather and Alcantara surfaces. Nappa leather surfaces and an Alcantara headliner — for coupes only — are among the key interior upgrades. Note that the highest-performing V10 Plus trim, however, has lighter-weight manually adjustable sport seats as standard equipment, with the power-adjustable chairs as an option.
Due to the car’s powertrain configuration, which positions the engine between the passenger compartment and the rear wheels, the R8 has a front storage compartment instead of a regular trunk. Capacity there is rated at 3.5 cubic feet.
The R8 is capable of blistering acceleration in all trims, and a magnetic ride-control suspension and all-wheel drive are standard to ensure superior all-around performance. The standard 4.2-liter V8 engine for the R8 does its part by making 430 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. In the mid-range engine, a 5.2-liter V10, output is increased to 525 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Finally, for the V10 Plus, that engine is tuned to produce 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. The R8 can run from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds in that trim, while reaching a top speed above 195 mph. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional for all trims.
Fuel-economy ratings for the R8 are competitive with those from other supercars and start at 11/20 mpg city/highway for the Audi’s standard powertrain. The highest EPA grades for the R8 come when the standard V8 engine is paired with the optional automatic transmission; that configuration is rated at 14/23 mpg city/highway.
In terms of driver-assistance technology, the R8 has an optional parking system that combines a rearview camera with front and rear parking sensors.
The car adds to its performance credibility with a lap timer as part of its standard driver information system. The standard sound system for the R8 is an Audi “concert radio” with seven speakers, Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming, an auxiliary input jack and satellite radio. For additional infotainment functionality, customers can order a navigation system with a 6.5-inch display, SD card slots, an iPod-compatible music interface and traffic information services. The premium sound system? That’s a 12-speaker setup from Bang & Olufsen with 465 watts of power.
