Hidden rear-door handles, located near the roof pillars, help maintain the sleek look.
Chevrolet supplies standard equipment such as halogen headlights, daytime running lights, a spoiler-mounted LED stop lamp, power-adjustable mirrors and 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The 2014 Spark EV has a multilevel dash in which the top, molded surface melts down into the center stack. It’s an artistic look that’s set off by wraparound trim on the next level. The instrument panel also deserves your attention. It projects from the dashboard in a curvy, concave setting shaped like a pair of racing goggles. The 60/40-split folding rear seats fit two people and leave 9.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity in the back. Folding those seats expands the storage area to 23.4 cubic feet.
Standard features include heated front seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel and blue cloth upholstery with circuit-board designs. Leatherette upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are optional.
The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV’s powertrain combines a 105-kW electric motor, a 21-kWh lithium-ion battery, front-wheel drive and the kind of single-speed automatic transmission that’s typical for an electric car. That setup delivers 140 horsepower and a steep 400 pound-feet of torque, which is what makes the Spark EV so fun to drive. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. Because the weight of the battery pack lowers the Spark EV’s center of gravity, you’ll also enjoy sporty handling.
You can charge up pretty quickly as well. A dedicated 240-volt electric source will do the job in about seven hours. With the available DC fast charger, you can fill the battery to 80 percent of capacity in roughly 20 minutes.
The Spark EV has an 82-mile electric driving range with equivalent fuel economy grades of 128/109 MPGe city/highway.
The 2014 Spark EV comes with a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system. This bundles a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, compatibility with Apple’s Siri Eyes Free, apps for online audio services, a USB port, an auxiliary input jack, satellite radio and a six-speaker sound system. A digital instrument panel also is standard.
