The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is an excellent alternative to a minivan. The SUV is a triple threat with its ability to haul large cargo, seat an entire family and provide a high level of comfort. If you don’t need something that can seat up to nine passengers or tow in excess of 8,000 pounds, other options are more fuel-efficient and easier to drive. Few other vehicles can match the Tahoe as a rugged people hauler.
The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is a large SUV available in three trims: LS, LT and LTZ. A V8 engine is the only available motor for the Tahoe and is paired with an automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available.
The Tahoe carries over mostly unchanged for 2014. The base LS trim now comes with the Convenience package as standard, which adds a rearview camera, rear park assist, remote start and power-adjustable pedals.
Chevrolet went with a conservative yet stylish design for the 2014 Tahoe. The large SUV manages to hide its size well thanks to a handsome exterior with clean lines. The corporate face with two slim air intakes sitting on top of and below a horizontal bar gives the Tahoe an uncluttered design. Large fender flares and generous height give the Tahoe some attitude.
Standard features include black assist steps, automatic headlamps, 17-inch aluminum wheels, a roof-mounted luggage rack and power-adjustable and heated mirrors. A set of 20-inch wheels is optional.
The inside of the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe resembles that of the marque’s pickup trucks. While the cabin features a lot of plastic trim pieces, the SUV has a well-thought-out design that matches its rugged qualities. The simple dashboard looks good, as does the instrument cluster. The center console is simply laid out and easy to use. Fit and finish is good for the segment. The seats are expansive and comfortable. The Tahoe’s enormous cabin provides ample space for all riders even when the vehicle’s full. The Tahoe seats eight in its standard configuration. Available second-row captain’s chairs reduce capacity to seven, and an optional 40/20/40 front bench seat boosts it to nine. The cargo capacity for the Tahoe is outstanding. Behind the third row, the Tahoe can hold up to 16.9 cubic feet of cargo. That figure grows to 60.3 cubic feet behind the second row. The Tahoe provides 108.9 cubic feet of storage space with all of the rows stowed.
The Tahoe comes with tri-zone manual climate control, power-adjustable pedals, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows and premium cloth bucket seats. Optional equipment includes a cloth 40/20/40-split bench front seat.
There’s only one available powertrain for the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe. The SUV is equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 that makes 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. The motor also can run on E85, which boosts its performance to 326 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard for the SUV. Power is routed to the rear wheels; a four-wheel-drive system is available.
The Tahoe can get up to 15/21 mpg in the city/highway. Towing capacity for the Tahoe is rated at 8,500 pounds.
On the road, the Tahoe’s V8 delivers more than enough grunt to get the SUV down the road and provides the power in a smooth way. Even when being pushed, the powertrain feels refined. The Tahoe rides well for a large utility SUV. While it’s as big as a truck, the SUV is more comfortable than one. The SUV’s suspension setup deals with large and small bumps in stride, resulting in a pleasant ride. Around corners, the Tahoe exhibits some body roll and nose dive under hard braking.
The 2014 Tahoe has a good list of technology features as standard. The SUV comes with a six-speaker sound system, satellite radio, a USB port, OnStar, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, remote keyless entry, a remote vehicle starter and rear park assist. Higher trims can be fitted with a rear-seat DVD player with wireless headphones, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, touch-screen navigation and side blind-zone alert.
