The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a luxury grand tourer that’s equal parts elegance and power. With that superior performance, as well as a comfortable ride, the SL-Class is a sports car that offers a great drive no matter how far the destination.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a two-seat convertible with a retractable hardtop. It’s available in three versions: SL550, SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG. All models are equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Rear-wheel drive is standard.
The SL-Class is mostly unchanged for 2014.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has a long and lean profile. Its front features a low, wide grille emphasized by large mesh intakes, which provide improved airflow into the substantially sized engine bay. The masculine sculpting continues with a sharp character line along the door panels matched by aggressive lower side sills. The taillights complement the elongated illusion that begins with the headlights.
Standard on the SL550 are 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with automatic high beams and a panoramic glass roof. The SL63 AMG is equipped with 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, and the SL65 AMG receives 19-inch wheels in the front paired with 20-inch wheels in the rear. Optional for SL550 models is a Sport Wheel package that offers 19-inch wheels, high-performance tires and upgraded brakes. A Carbon Fiber package for AMG models adds exterior flourishes. A Magic Sky Control roof, which is an auto-dimming transparent glass top, is available for all models.
The cabin of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is the epitome of open-air opulence. Sun-reflective leather upholstery and wood trim are used throughout. AMG models boast Nappa leather and carbon fiber trim. For a two-seat roadster, the cabin provides plenty of headroom and legroom. Also, thanks to its lengthy proportions, the SL-Class offers a usable top-up 10.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity or 7.2 cubic feet when it’s in convertible mode. There is a built-in storage bin behind the seats as well.
Standard features on the SL550 include dual-zone automatic climate control, 12-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a power wind deflector and the AirScarf system which, as the name suggests, provides neck-level air heating. An optional wood-and-leather steering wheel is available for all vehicles.
Each 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class model is equipped with a trim-specific engine and specially tuned seven-speed automatic transmission. Each drivetrain is robust in delivering sports car performance. An automatic engine stop-start system is standard for all models.
The SL550 boasts a twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that produces 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 18/25 mpg city/highway. The SL63 AMG features a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with an output of 530 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy comes in at 16/25 mpg city/highway. If optioned with the SL63-specific AMG Performance package, power increases to 557 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The SL65 AMG is fitted with a 6.0-liter twin-turbo AMG V12 that makes 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The EPA estimates that the fuel economy is 14/21 mpg city/highway. This top-of-the-line SL-Class reaches 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
Active Body Control, which is optional on the SL550 and standard on SL AMG models, upgrades the suspension to an AMG-tuned system. The SL63 and SL65 offer more aggressive handling and sporty dynamics but are no less comfortable for cruising than the SL550. The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class can be as potent or posh a driving experience as you need it to be.
The 2014 SL-Class features a high level of technology befitting of the brand. Standard features include Harman Kardon premium audio, a six-CD changer, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, HD Radio, a hard drive-based navigation system, digital music storage, a USB port and a smartphone app-based vehicle management. Keyless entry and a foot-activated power trunk lid also are standard. Optional is a 900-watt Bang & Olufson sound system and a split-view infotainment screen.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, a driver-attention system and a pre-collision system that automatically tightens seat belts, adjusts seats and rolls up the window should sensors detect an accident is imminent. A Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, pre-collision automatic braking, lane keep assist and blind-spot monitoring.

User Reviews for 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
by Jack on December 17, 2019
"Excellent for high performance street driving, top down touring and as a comfortable stylish coupe. It is not for the track although it is capable of track duty. This car is perfect for a second or third vehicle, not a family car and not off road capable. The sound is to die for... "
Comfort and support for sporty driving. Heated and cooled seats with neck scarf when driving with the top down on cooler days.
Cashmere white with carbon fiber highlights and black wheels.
Fast, great handling all while being very comfortable.
Two seater, great for a second car.
Normal maintenance is a little higher than for an average car but lower than a lot of cars with similar performance. It can be considered a bargain compared to exotics. Very few repairs.
