The Nissan Versa combines some of the industry’s lowest pricing with a relatively roomy interior and some modern-day amenities. Sure, it doesn’t have a lot of frills, but it achieves the goal of getting from point A to point B.
The 2014 Nissan Versa, a subcompact sedan that seats five, comes in four trim levels: S, S Plus, SV and SL. Each comes standard with front-wheel drive and a four-cylinder engine. (The 2014 Nissan Versa Note hatchback is available separately.)
For 2014, the Versa is enhanced across the lineup. The S trim, for example, adds a standard tachometer and low-rolling-resistance tires. New for the SV trim are a standard 60/40-split rear seat and remote trunk release. In the Versa SL, the newly standard content extends to 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a 4.3-inch LCD infotainment display, an iPod-compatible USB port and satellite radio. All Versa models additionally benefit from retuned suspension and steering systems, minor style updates and revised packages.
A tall, rounded roofline, an expressive grille and an aerodynamic shape all work to visually distinguish the Versa sedan from its rivals. As for standard content, the budget-focused Versa provides multi-reflector halogen headlights, 15-inch covered steel wheels and manually adjustable exterior mirrors.
Available upgrades include foglights, power-adjustable exterior mirrors, chrome accents, a rear spoiler with LED brake lights and 15- and 16-inch alloy wheels.
With manual windows and door locks, the cabin reflects a value focus. Air conditioning is standard, as is a tiltable steering wheel and an interesting triangular arrangement for its lower center-stack control knobs. Premium cloth seating and a six-way manually adjustable driver’s chair increase comfort for upper trims, which deliver extra convenience with a multi-function steering wheel and push-button start.
Rear seats in the Versa supply more legroom than those in the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic sedan, and Nissan offers a 60/40-split folding option for the back, too. Next, the Versa beats out the 2014 Ford Fiesta sedan with a trunk capacity of 14.9 cubic feet.
A competent choice for daily transportation, the 2014 Versa relies on a front-wheel-drive configuration and a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque for all trims. Three transmission choices are on hand to differentiate those trims, though, starting with the Versa S. It comes with a standard five-speed transmission or optional four-speed automatic. Higher trims feature a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The Versa’s transmissions also impact its EPA ratings. Thus, the S trim has fuel-economy grades of 27/35 and 26/35 mpg city/highway with its manual and automatic transmissions, while CVT-equipped trims raise those marks to 31/39 mpg city/highway.
A limited array of technology also helps to keep costs down in the Versa: The standard audio system has two speakers and an auxiliary input port. That said, the Versa SL gains the infotainment content mentioned above, and the SL Tech package caps off Versa infotainment offerings with a 5.8-inch touch screen, a rearview monitor, navigation, Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming, hands-free text-messaging assistance and a four-speaker sound system. Real-time traffic and weather services also support the Versa’s available navigation system.
