Even though it doesn’t look that way, the 2014 Toyota Yaris is an economical and efficient example of basic transportation. It’s just that Toyota combined the car’s frugal powertrain with an avant-garde interior design and expressive sheet metal. This is actually ideal for the Yaris’ natural habitat, since it was designed to be at home in city streets.
The Yaris is Toyota’s subcompact hatchback, and it comes with a five-seat cabin layout. Top rivals include the Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio and Nissan Versa, but only the Yaris offers both three- and five-door hatchback body styles. Toyota provides three trim levels as well: L, LE and SE. The lineup’s standard powertrain has a four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission. The optional transmission is a four-speed automatic.
Daytime running lights are newly standard for the 2014 model year.
The two different body styles have the same lengths, so they share the same sporty stance, too. In each case, the Yaris seems to be leaning forward to take off even before you get behind the wheel. The wraparound lights at the rear also extend a bit like miniature tailfins.
The base model is equipped with reflector-style halogen headlights, daytime running lights, foldable mirrors and 15-inch covered steel wheels. The SE model, offered only in the five-door body style, spices things up with fog lights, a mesh grille insert, sport-style front and rear bumpers, a rear air diffuser, a rear spoiler and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Power-adjustable mirrors are also available for the Yaris.
A funky asymmetric dashboard grabs your attention in the Yaris’ cabin. It features an eclectic assortment of shapes and surfaces including a long, vaguely fish-like trim panel extending across the passenger side of the dash. The panel appears to have melted its way into the center of the dash, below the free-form center climate vents and above the shelf for the climate controls. In the back, a folding rear seat is standard.
Both Yaris body styles have the same competitive measures for headroom and legroom, but with a slight difference in cargo space. The five-door models, with 15.6 cubic feet of storage room behind the rear seats, provide an extra 0.3 cubic feet over the three-door versions.
Standard equipment includes fabric upholstery, four-way manually adjustable front seats, air conditioning, power door locks and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. The Yaris is available with sport-style fabric upholstery, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, 60/40-split folding rear seats, cruise control, power windows and a leather-trimmed steering wheel with integrated audio controls.
A 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard. This unit produces 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque, with that output sent solely to the car’s front wheels. The Yaris also has a standard five-speed manual transmission that can be swapped for an optional four-speed automatic. Sport-tuned suspension and steering systems bring sharper handling to the SE trim levels.
The Yaris’ fuel economy ratings can reach 30/36 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission.
The Yaris comes with a standard audio system that bundles Bluetooth, an AM/FM stereo, HD radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an auxiliary input jack and six speakers.

True economy car
"Good. Okay. Adequate. Economical."
Good. Okay. Nice. Serves the purpose. Liked the 2007 cup holders better.
Good. Nice. Okay. Serves the purpose.
Good. Okay. Nice. Economical.
Payments are a trifle under $200. Gas consumption is low. Only upkeep so far is changing the oil, and buying a set of tires because we wore the first set out. Good news is that the tires are economy size also. The AC hasn’t had to be recharged, we haven’t had to replace the brake pads, and we are still using the original spark plugs. Bad news is that we can’t get a hatchback two door, 5 speed manual transmission, with manual windows like our 2007. Wish Toyota would make a Yaris convertible on the lines of the Mazda Miata, because our Yaris hatchbacks are almost as fun to drive as our Miata was...
"Solid, reliable, quality, excellent as usual. No one builds cars like Toyota. I wish I had been a Toyota buyer when I first started driving. I would have been a millionaire but for the American junk I drove."
Functional and comfortable.
Sharp looking, nice lines.
When it you need it, it is there.
Not so sure here. Too many variables to answer this objectively.
So far so good. Bought used from Hertz w/ 39k. Everything seems tight and it has been checked out 3 times with each time given a clean bill of health.
