It’s not the sexiest, roomiest or the most potent midsize sedan, but there’s still a lot to like about the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu. Its ride quality is excellent, a turbocharged engine is available, and technology features are abundant.
The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu seats five. It’s offered in three main trims: LS, LT and LTZ. Buyers will choose between one of two engines. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard across the lineup.
All Malibus receive a 4G data connection with Wi-Fi hot spot capability this year. The Malibu Eco hybrid is no longer offered.
The latest Chevrolet Malibu continues the modern design cues that brought it more in line with its stablemate, the Chevrolet Impala. Its good looks begin up front with an aggressive lower bumper and a two-tiered grille. A character line runs down the center of the hood, adding an athletic touch. The sleek curves are not only aesthetic; they aim to reduce wind drag. Base models ride on 16-inch alloy wheels.
Automatic headlights are standard and xenon headlights are optional. Pricier trims gain a sunroof, fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and heated side-view mirrors with integrated turn signals.
The cabin of the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu boasts an uplevel design that’s hard to find in the midsize sedan segment. The stylish dual-cockpit dashboard echoes curves found in its sheet metal. Soft-touch surfaces fill the interior. The front seats are supportive without being overly firm. Adults will note the rear seats are a bit cramped for more than a short trip across town. The Malibu’s trunk measures 16.3 cubic feet, which is above average for the class.
Standard equipment includes power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and cloth upholstery. Available up the trim line are leatherette or leather upholstery, as well as dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver’s seat, an eight-way power passenger seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The base engine in the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 196 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 25/36 mpg city/highway. Also available is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant with 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It achieves up to 21/30 mpg city/highway. Both fuel economy ratings are respectable for the class and are aided by start-stop technology. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard across the lineup.
Quiet, responsive and able to soak up bumps well, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is a desirable road-trip companion. Though the base engine offers ample acceleration, the turbocharged engine provides much more zip. It also handles admirably on twisty roads, confidently taking corners. Though some rivals like the 2015 Mazda6 may be more fun to drive, it’s hard to find much fault with the Malibu when you’re behind the wheel.
Base models come with a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, Bluetooth phone connectivity and OnStar with 4G connectivity. A nine-speaker Pioneer audio system, a 120-volt power outlet, a navigation system and a rearview camera are optional. Higher trims add Bluetooth audio connectivity, a 7-inch touch screen, voice controls, Internet radio and app connectivity, voice-to-text messaging, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB interface.
The Advanced Safety package adds forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
