You won’t find any high-tech driver-assistance features in the 2015 Dodge Viper. Instead, you can help yourself to tremendous performance in a track-friendly package. Dodge does it the old-school way, too, fitting the car with a massive naturally aspirated engine.
The Viper is a two-door, two-seat supercar that’s offered in base, GT and GTS trim levels. A V10 engine, a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard across the lineup.
A number of engine upgrades are new this year and deliver small bumps in power and efficiency. Viper TA (Time Attack) 2.0 and Viper GTS Ceramic Blue special editions also debut for 2015. The first, designed specifically for the racecourse, delivers improved aerodynamics and handling. The second focuses on style cues like an exclusive Ceramic Blue exterior finish and silver cabin stitching. The GT trim is new as well and includes customized GTC variants with hand-painted exterior colors and stripes.
A long, vented hood is needed for that V10 powerplant, and it helps establish the Viper’s classic sports-car proportions. Another sporty touch is the “double bubble” roof, which improves headroom while maintaining slippery aerodynamics. Both the hood and roof are also made from carbon fiber to help lower the Viper’s curb weight. In the back, a top-hinged liftgate leaves room for a fair amount of cargo.
High-intensity discharge headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, LED taillights, power mirrors, a rear spoiler and staggered 19- and 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are standard. Available features include racing stripes, alternative wheel designs and carbon-fiber body pieces like front splitters, a rear wing spoiler and front and rear brake-vent bezels.
The Dodge Viper has a simple driver-focused interior with a low-profile instrument panel and a molded frame around the center stack. Flowing door-panel lines also reflect the Viper’s subtly curved exterior sheet metal. There’s not much headroom here, but you will find nearly 43 inches of legroom and 14.65 cubic feet of storage space.
The Viper’s standard features include six-way manually adjustable sport seats with ballistic nylon and vinyl upholstery. Also standard are a leather-wrapped instrument panel, automatic climate control, power-adjustable pedals and a leather-wrapped tilt-adjustable multifunction steering wheel. Six-way power-adjustable leather seats, diamond-patterned seat inserts, Alcantara headliners and carbon-fiber trim are all available.
The Viper’s powertrain starts with an 8.4-liter V10 engine. This unit is good for 645 horsepower, which is five more than last year, and 600 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, a limited-slip differential, Brembo brakes and a three-mode stability-control system are also standard. Performance options include upgraded Brembo brakes, a two-mode suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and a five-mode stability-control setup that adds “Sport” and “Track” settings.
The fuel-economy ratings for the base Viper are 12/21 mpg city/highway, which improves over the 2014 model by two mpg on the highway.
The 2015 Viper has standard equipment such as a rearview camera, a navigation system, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and Uconnect infotainment technology. That Uconnect system comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, a USB port, an auxiliary input jack and an SD-card reader.
A Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system is optional with 18 speakers that include four subwoofers.
