The 2015 Fiat 500e combines comely Italian styling with full-electric operation. This is one of the more stylish and entertaining electric vehicles that isn’t a Tesla. It lacks back seat room and cargo space, but the 500e offers quick acceleration and lively handling.
The Fiat 500e is an electric subcompact car that four. It competes with small electric cars like the Nissan Leaf and Kia Soul EV, and it was initially sold in California and Oregon when new. The 500e is sold in a single well-equipped trim level with limited options. A battery/electric powertrain drives the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. The gas-powered Fiat 500 (and the higher-performance 500 Abarth) are covered in a separate review.
The Fiat 500e gets only minor changes for 2015. A redesigned center console features a new cupholder design and an additional USB port for the infotainment system. Various tweaks, including added sound-deadening material and acoustic windshield glass, help reduce interior noise while driving.
A few inches shorter than a Mini Cooper, the 2015 Fiat 500e has a retro-modern exterior look with rounded body lines and stubby front- and rear-end treatments. When compared with the gas-only model, the 500e benefits from subtle refinements that improve its aerodynamics and efficiency at higher speeds.
Standard equipment includes bi-halogen projector-style headlamps, daytime running lamps, halogen fog lights and a power sunroof. The 500e rides on 15-inch aluminum wheels with “Nero” inserts. The e-Sport option package includes specific wheels with “Arancio Electrico Perla” inserts, and unique exterior trim.
Like the standard 500, the 2015 Fiat 500e carries a funky interior treatment. The interior color is matched to the exterior hue in a matte finish. A 7-inch color electronic gauge cluster incorporates a configurable trip computer. A 4.3-inch display resides at the top center of the dashboard for the infotainment and navigation systems. While front-seat room is sufficient for adults, there’s little in the way of useable back-seat space.
Cargo space is limited to just 7.0 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat.
Standard features include heated front seats, automatic climate control, 50/50-split folding rear seatbacks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a tilt steering column and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The 2015 Fiat 500e has an electric motor that generates 111 horsepower with a lively 147 pound-feet of torque. That’s good for a sprint to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. The EPA rates its operating range at 87 miles on a charge, which should be sufficient for most commutes. As with other EV’s, this range can be affected by factors like vehicle speed, ambient temperature and use of accessories. Its 97-cell liquid heated/cooled lithium-ion battery pack recharges in less than 4 hours when connected to a 220-volt (Level 2) charger, and it takes around 24 hours to charge with a standard household outlet.
The EPA rates the 2015 Fiat 500e at the electric equivalent of 122/108-mpg city/highway. That’s 26 kilowatts-per-hour (kHh) of electricity consumed per 100 miles.
On the road, the Fiat 500e feels much like the standard gasoline version, with energetic handling that makes even around-town driving enjoyable. This comes at the expense of a slightly rough ride, however. The car’s regenerative braking system, which is used to recover energy that would otherwise be lost while stopping, is tuned to provide less drag. This helps create a consistent brake feel with added brake-pad longevity.
The 2015 Fiat 500 comes adequately, though not opulently, equipped in terms of technology. Standard features include a rear park-assist proximity alarm and remote keyless entry. A six-speaker, 276-watt audio system comes with a CD player, navigation, voice recognition, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and Fiat’s subscription-based telematics service.
