The 2015 Infiniti QX60 is a midsize luxury crossover that emphasizes family comfort and daily versatility.
The Infiniti QX60 is a three-row luxury SUV that shares a lot of similarities with the Nissan Pathfinder. However, the QX60 features all of the luxury you’d expect from the Infiniti brand. Features that set it apart include sliding and reclining second-row seats, easy access to the third row (which will accommodate children and many teenagers) and a somewhat lower price tag than many rivals in the segment.
The 2015 QX60 comes with a V6 engine, though it’s also available as a hybrid that offers some of the highest fuel economy ratings in the class. Only one trim is offered, which is available with front- or all-wheel drive. A number of available option packages are available to upgrade convenience, comfort and curb appeal.
The well-appointed base QX60 includes bi-xenon headlights, LED tail lamps, a power liftgate, keyless entry/ignition and heated, power-folding side mirrors. An auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, and tri-zone automatic climate control finish off notable standard equipment.
The exterior of the Infiniti QX60 is very similar to its larger stable mate, the QX80. It features a wide, rounded Infiniti grille accented by chrome bars and the Infiniti logo at center. The QX60’s body work flows rearward from the hood and fenders, while a curved C-pillar and an angled roofline create a sporty appearance.
Seventeen-inch wheels adorn the base model and 20-inch wheels appear on some upper-level packages. It’s a great looking vehicle, but it doesn’t necessarily stand out in the crowded field of stylish midsize crossovers.
The QX60’s interior is very refined, with plush appointments and ergonomic control placement. Seating is adjustable in the first two rows while the third row folds and raises at the push of a button. Tri-zone automatic climate control includes separate controls for the driver, front passenger and rear seats. The second row includes vents above the doors that are easily reached for adjustment.
Cargo space is large and easily accessed, and there’s 76.5 cubic feet of space with the second and third rows folded.
With the third row up, cargo space is limited, of course, but access is easy thanks to both forward-folding second-row seating (single lever control) and a standard power liftgate. It’s worth noting that the QX60 Hybrid has the same amount of cargo space.
The 2015 QX60 is offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, while the QX60 Hybrid has a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. We tested the V6-powered QX60, which features a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front- or all-wheel drive is available (we had the all-wheel drive model).
The V6 produces 265 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is good and handling is also fairly composed for the class. Towing is rated at 5,000 pounds, when properly equipped, which is good for this segment.
Fuel economy in the QX60 is good, with an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined for front-wheel drive models, or 22 mpg combined for the all-wheel drive version. We saw numbers slightly lower than that in real-world testing, averaging about 21.5 mpg after a week of mixed driving in very cold temperatures.
The Infiniti infotainment system is relatively easy to use. Most standard controls for climate and audio have user-friendly physical buttons and dials, and the navigation system is fairly straightforward to program.
All QX60 models come with a USB port, Bluetooth (phone only), satellite radio and a 7-inch touch-screen audio system. Available features include a Bose audio system and a voice-controlled navigation system with Bluetooth audio streaming and an 8-inch touch screen.
The 2015 Infiniti QX60 earned five out of five stars for its overall performance in crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2015 QX60 a Top Safety Pick award for its strong performance in all IIHS crash tests.
All QX60 models come standard with a rearview camera, while available driver assistance features include forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring. A 360-degree camera system is also available to ease parking maneuvers.
The QX60’s base price is generally lower than most of its similarly appointed competitors, but cost-effectiveness is largely going to be subject to buyer expectation. Infiniti products as a whole have lower-than-average resale values, but their luxury level status means that they are more sought after and less likely to be sold before they’re out of their prime.
Altogether, the 2015 Infiniti QX60 pleases with a competitive price, good fuel economy, excellent interior ergonomics and a well-mannered ride. The QX60 also offers high-level amenities and understated versatility that will make it a favorite to those who use it every day.
