More than 18 feet long, the 2015 Lincoln Navigator L is a segment leader for cargo space and third-row legroom. It’s a powerful choice, too, with a towing capacity of more than four tons. The Navigator also stands out from other capable mainstream vehicles with its luxurious cabin appointments.
The Navigator L is a full-size luxury SUV. It offers three rows of seating with positions for seven or eight people. The Select trim level is the base model, while a Reserve trim is also available. The standard powertrain combines a new twin-turbo V6, a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is also available. (The 2015 Lincoln Navigator with the regular-length wheelbase is reviewed separately.)
Along with its new powerplant, the 2015 Navigator L gets fresh styling both inside and out. The biggest design change is the vehicle’s unique split-wing grille.
You’ll be sure to attract attention with the Navigator L’s bold front end which features a two-piece, vertically split grille over a full-width lower-intake area. The wrap-around rear lighting also spans the width of the rear for a matching accent at the back. A traditional SUV-style silhouette reminds you of the Navigator L’s rugged capabilities.
Projector-style high-intensity discharge headlamps, LED headlight accents, LED daytime running lamps, a power liftgate, 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and heated power-folding mirrors with approach lights and integrated turn signals are standard. The Navigator L also offers available features like a power moonroof, power-deployable running boards and 22-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
Lincoln designers bring a dual-cockpit look to the interior, with hooded dashboard panels on each side of the cabin. The center stack is inset between the two and flows smoothly into the vehicle’s center console. Captain’s chairs are standard for the second row. For the third, a 60/40-split folding bench is standard. The Navigator L provides 42.6 cubic feet of cargo space with all those seats in use. Folding the third row expands cargo capacity to 86.3 cubic feet, and that jumps to 128.2 cubic feet with all rear seats folded.
The Navigator L gets luxurious standard equipment like leather upholstery for the first and second rows, climate-controlled 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated second-row seats, a power-folding third row, dual-zone automatic climate control, wood trim, power-adjustable pedals, a power-adjustable steering column and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with real wood accents. That still leaves options including a leather-trimmed instrument panel, upgraded leather upholstery for all seats and a 40/20/40-split folding second row.
The vehicle’s standard twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is good for 380 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive and a load-leveling rear suspension are standard. You can build onto that setup with available four-wheel drive and a Lincoln Drive Control suspension. With three ride settings, this sophisticated suspension continually adjusts to changes in road conditions.
Despite its turbocharged engine, the fuel economy scores for the Navigator L top out at 15/20 mpg city/highway with rear-wheel drive.
The Navigator L also has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds when equipped with rear-wheel drive. This is 400 pounds more than a comparable 2015 Cadillac Escalade ESV can tow.
Although it can’t match the Infiniti QX80 with options like adaptive cruise control, the Lincoln does offer standard driver-assistance technologies such as a backup camera, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors. The Navigator L’s standard tech features also include a Sync with MyLincoln Touch infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, a navigation system, Bluetooth, satellite radio and two USB ports. The standard THX Certified audio system adds an AM/FM stereo, CD player, HD Radio and 14 speakers.
A dual-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment system is available for rear-seat passengers.
