The 2015 Mazda Mazda5 is the smallest minivan on the market, and its relatively petite footprint makes it easily maneuverable when backing into tight parking spaces and cruising down narrow city streets. It also provides keen handling, and it’s more affordable than rival models.
Mazda’s Mazda5 is a four-door minivan that seats six passengers. Three trim levels are available: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. All models come with a four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive.
For 2015, the Mazda5’s manual transmission has been discontinued.
The Mazda5 has a quirky exterior. Despite its relatively small size, it offers much of the functionality you expect from a minivan. Its two rear doors slide open for easy access, and a rear liftgate makes loading cargo a breeze. Up front, the Mazda5’s gaping grille resembles a smile, and gives this minivan a playful look.
Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, manually operated rear sliding doors, halogen headlamps and exterior mirrors with integrated LED turn signals. Upgrades include fog lights, 17-inch wheels, a rear roof spoiler, a power sunroof, automatic xenon headlights, heated exterior mirrors and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Within its cabin, the Mazda5 features a clean, no-frills design and pleasant accommodations. Unlike some larger minivans, all the controls are close to the driver and within easy reach. The first two rows are roomy, but the third row will be a tight fit for most adults. Second-row captain’s chairs are standard, and they slide and recline for greater versatility. The Mazda5 provides 11.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. With the third row lowered, cargo capacity jumps to 44.4 cubic feet. Larger minivans provide a lot more room for your belongings.
Standard features include automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cloth upholstery and a 50/50-split folding rear seat. The list of optional features includes heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and leather upholstery.
Its relatively compact dimensions help make the Mazda5 a nimble companion. Its handling is sporty and responsive, and it provides a more entertaining driving experience than larger choices in this segment. A five-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front wheels.
All models are equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. This engine achieves 21/28 mpg city/highway.
The Mazda5 offers fewer tech amenities than many of its rivals. Its standard features include a USB port, a CD/MP3 player, an auxiliary input jack and a six-speaker audio system. The range of options includes Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, satellite radio, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and rear parking sensors. Driver-assistive features such as a rearview camera and a blind-spot warning system aren’t available.
