There’s a reason that the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has been a fixture in the marque’s lineup for more than 60 years. Modern-day versions still have the head-turning sheet metal and performance for which the SL is known, but they also offer a posh, comfortable cabin and a long list of infotainment and safety features.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a retractable hardtop convertible that seats two. It’s available in four trims: SL400, SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG. Four different engines are available. All pair with an automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard across the lineup.
The entry-level SL400 trim joins the SL family for 2015. Limited-slip rear differential, power boost and top speed increase become standard on the SL AMG versions for the 2015 model year. The SL65 AMG gets a new seven-speed transmission, and the six-disc CD changer has been eliminated.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL gives a nod to its predecessors with a long roof, short trunk lid, and an oversized grille. The large nose gives the front end a brawny, even imposing look. Two large air intakes add another masculine touch. The handsome, contoured sheet metal gives way to a tapered rear end with sharply angled tail lamps. Base models ride on 18-inch wheels.
Also standard on the SL400 are adaptive xenon headlights, automatic high-beam control, LED daytime running lights, front and rear fog lights, automatic windshield wipers, and a power-folding hardtop. The Sport Wheel package adds 19-inch alloy wheels. The 19-inch alloy wheels are standard on both versions of the SL AMG. The trim-topping SL65 AMG comes dressed with 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels, as well as a panoramic roof and soft-closing doors. An option for AMG models is the High-Contrast Styling package, which includes 19-inch front alloy wheels and 20-inch rear alloy wheels, a glossy black hardtop and rear spoiler, and black chrome exhaust tips.
Top-notch materials and a cockpit feel lead the way in the cabin of the 2015 SL. Despite a large number of buttons and knobs, the interior remains orderly and not overly cluttered. Even tall passengers will enjoy abundant headroom and legroom, and plenty of fore-and-aft travel. Cargo capacity is generous for a two-seater. The SL provides 10.2 cubic feet of trunk space with the roof up and 7.2 cubic feet of room when it’s down.
Standard equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control, perforated leather seating, 12-way power-adjustable seats, heated seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Options for the SL400 include ventilated seats with massage, the AirScarf neck-heating system and a sport steering wheel with perforated leather trim. AMG models have illuminated door sills and upgraded leather upholstery and interior trim.
Under the hood of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that generates 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The SL550 gets a turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 engine that produces 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Both powerplants are mated with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The SL63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 that makes 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the SL65 AMG has a 6.0-liter V6 that cranks out 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The AMG models come with a different seven-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard for all models.
Fuel economy ranges from an EPA-estimated 20/27 mpg city/highway for the SL400 to 14/21 mpg city/highway for the SL65 AMG.
Drivers won’t long for much behind the wheel of the SL. Powerful and nimble, the SL satisfies not only those who are OK with taking it a bit slower, but those who are willing to push the limits of a street car. The Active Body Control system eliminates body roll and improves handling. The SL is a willing companion on windy roads and offers a smooth ride, even on rough roads.
Even the base SL400 offers a nice array of infotainment and safety features, including Bluetooth connectivity, a navigation system and an 11-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system with a CD player, satellite radio, HD Radio, and USB/iPod port. Among the options for the SL400 are a rearview camera, an automatic parallel parking system, and keyless entry and ignition. Front and rear parking sensors are standard on the SL550. An available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot warning system and active lane-keeping assist on the SL400, SL550, and SL AMG. Premium touches available only on the SL65 AMG include a night-vision infrared camera system and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

2 years and counting.
"The car has everything I need and is a beauty to drive in any type of weather other than heavy snow or frozen roads.
Gasoline consumption is on the high side.....but that's the penalty for making use of a powerful engine and well balanced construction. " Read Less
