The 2015 Mini Roadster isn’t the most practical car on the market, but it sure is fun to drive. For starters, the car has nimble handling and a low curb weight for dynamic performance. The Roadster’s body style lets you enjoy open-air driving at any speed.
The 2015 Mini Roadster is, well, a roadster. That means it’s a sporty two-door, two-seat convertible. To honor John Cooper, the racer and engineer who developed the original Mini, the lineup’s entry model is officially the Mini Cooper Roadster. You also can find higher-performing Cooper S and John Cooper Works trim levels. All have four-cylinder engines, six-speed manual transmissions and front-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic is optional for each model. (The same auto brand provides a four-seat drop-top option in a separate model, the 2015 Mini Cooper Convertible.)
For 2015, new content for the Roadster includes standard rain-sensing wipers and optional LED fog lights.
The obvious design cue for the 2015 Mini Roadster is its power-operated soft convertible top. The car also is known for its aggressive stance and short overhangs. (That refers to how much of a vehicle extends forward and backward past its wheels.) The Roadster shows its stylish side with a high shoulder line, rounded headlights, a low-profile hood scoop and centered exhaust outlets. Hood stripes and other graphics are available for the car, too.
The 2015 Mini Cooper Roadster comes standard with a mix of premium and basic content. So the entry model provides automatic headlights, heated mirrors, a power-retractable rear spoiler and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The car also offers its share of available equipment, including high-intensity-discharge headlamps, LED fog lamps, daytime running lights, power-folding mirrors and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The John Cooper Works Roadster is distinguished by unique cues such as an aerodynamic body kit.
The expressive cabin for the 2015 Roadster is centered around a large, circle-shaped speedometer built into the center of the sculpted dashboard and flanked by circular climate vents and smooth plastic trim. Also making a visual impact inside the car are fixed roll bars. For practicality, the Roadster’s top folds into a space behind the front seats without affecting trunk space. As a result, you get 8.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Standard content for the Cooper Roadster includes leatherette upholstery, six-way manually adjustable seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, an air-conditioned glove box and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. To maximize comfort in the Mini, you can opt for heated seats, sport seats and real-leather upholstery.
The standard engine for the Roadster family is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 121 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. If you step up to the Cooper S Roadster, the same engine is turbocharged for 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The Cooper Works team ups the ante for the range-topping model. It relies on 208 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque from the turbo engine. Dynamic traction control and Brembo front brakes are standard for the Cooper Works model as well. A six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, and a six-speed automatic is optional, for all Roadster trim levels.
With its standard manual transmission, the Mini Roadster has fuel economy grades of 27/33 mpg city/highway.
The Mini Roadster is more focused on driver excitement than driver assistance. It has a standard six-speaker sound system with Bluetooth, HD Radio, an AM/FM stereo, a CD player, a USB port and an auxiliary input jack.
Rear parking sensors are optional. So are upgrades such as a navigation system, smartphone integration, a Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, a 6.5-inch infotainment display with a console-mounted controller.
