The 2016 Audi S5 is a high-performance luxury sports car with a striking design, a luxurious interior and a punchy engine. As with the majority of Audi’s other vehicles, all-wheel drive is standard, which makes the S5 enjoyable to drive all year. The S5’s tricky infotainment system and the lack of a USB port are the only noticeable downsides.
Available as a coupe or cabriolet, the 2016 Audi S5 seats four. Both the coupe and cabriolet are offered in two trims: Premium Plus and Prestige. The S5 is powered by a supercharged V6 engine paired with a manual or an automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.
Only minor changes have been made for the 2016 model year. A Bang & Olufsen audio system becomes standard. A Black Optic Plus package now is available offering for the S5, as are black side-mirror housings and 20-inch wheels.
The S5 is aging quickly when it comes to its looks, but Audi managed to pen one of the best-looking sports cars on the segment. The high-performance vehicle shares a lot of design elements with the A5, from which it’s derived. The S5 wears an enormous trapezoidal grille that runs from the edge of the hood to the bottom of the front fascia. Slim, angular headlights start a character line that runs the entire length of the vehicle. Muscular fenders give the S5 its wide stature that carries to the back with lengthy rectangular taillights. A quad exhaust system reinforces the S5’s sporty demeanor.
Standard features include 18-inch wheels, heated mirrors, quad exhaust outlets, a rear spoiler, xenon headlights with LED accents and fog lights. Optional features include 19-inch wheels, gloss black trim and summer performance tires.
The fit and finish of the 2015 S5’s cabin are first class, and Audi utilized upscale materials to create an opulent interior. The three-pronged steering wheel and chunky dashboard are striking. The seats offer great support and are comfortable for daily use. At first glance, the S5’s center console and infotainment buttons come off as confusing. Once you learn what all of the buttons do, though, you’re treated to one of the nicer interiors in the segment.
The S5 comes with Nappa leather seats, 12-way power front S sport-contoured seats, brushed aluminum trim, a three-spoke flat-bottom sport steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and heated front seats. Optional equipment includes perforated Milano leather seats, 14-way power seats and ventilated front seats.
The S5 is fitted with a zippy engine that provides thrilling performance. The coupe and cabriolet are powered by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that’s rated to make 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The engine can be paired with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.
Fuel economy for the S5 is solid, especially considering its high level of performance. It’s rated to get up to 18/28 mpg city/highway.
Instead of going with a turbocharger, Audi went with a supercharger, which results in inspiring performance. Acceleration for the S5, thanks to the engine and all-wheel-drive system, is exceptional. Around corners, the S5 performs admirably as well, with a confident and surefooted ride. On the open road, the S5 manages to be comfortable. It also happens to ride well over rough roads, which is unique for the segment. The S5 really is the ultimate sports car, as it can do everything well.
The S5 comes with a number of standard technology features, including a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 14 speakers, keyless entry, a 7-inch touch screen, a HomeLink transceiver, an SD card slot with 32 gigabytes of available data, three 12-volt power outlets, Bluetooth and iPod integration. Optional technology features include a rearview camera, a parking assist system, lane change assistant, satellite radio and navigation.
