The 2016 Audi SQ5 is one of the better luxury compact crossovers on the market. The SUV blends performance, luxury and usability in an attractive package. Few options on the road can match the SQ5 when it comes to athleticism and opulence. The SQ5’s suffers from a small cargo area and lacks some modern technology features, however.
The 2016 Audi SQ5 seats five. Audi offers the SQ5 in two trims: Premium Plus and Prestige. A supercharged V6 pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.
For 2016, Audi has made some changes to the SQ5’s list of available features. Bespoke 20-inch wheels and seats with a diamond pattern are optional. The Premium Plus model can be fitted with an adaptive suspension system.
It’s hard to mistake the 2016 SQ5 as being anything but an Audi. The SUV features the brand’s iconic trapezoidal grille, which takes up the majority of space on the front end. Soft styling cues for the roofline and beltline give the SQ5 a handsome design that makes it stand out in a parking lot. Slightly flared fenders and silver exterior mirrors hint toward the SQ5’s performance, and a curvy rear end gives the SQ5 a sports-car-like look.
Standard features include xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, front and rear fog lights, LED taillights, auto-dimming and heated exterior mirrors, a power tailgate and 20-inch wheels. Matte black aluminum roof rails, gloss black trim and a headlight washing system are optional.
The 2016 SQ5’s cabin has a good mix of luxury and sporty features. The elegant layout of the dashboard and center console provide posh touches. Material quality and the fit and finish are on par with what others in the segment offer. The thick steering wheel, unique shift knob and supportive sport seats make the SQ5 feel more athletic than the regular Q5. The rear seats are comfortable and offer an ample amount of room for adults. The SQ5, however, falls short in cargo capacity. With the rear seats in place, the SUV can hold 29.1 cubic feet of cargo. Fold the rear seats down, and cargo capacity increases to 57.3 cubic feet.
The SQ5 comes with tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, ambient LED interior lighting and a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Optional features include a flat-bottom sport steering wheel, perforated Milano leather seats, 12-way power front seats and ventilated front seats.
The 2016 Audi SQ5 features a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 354 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.
Fuel economy comes in at 17/24 mpg city/highway.
With the supercharged engine, the SQ5 has performance that mimics a sports car. Audi claims the SUV can get to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, which makes it one of the quicker vehicles in the segment. While the SQ5 has Audi’s all-wheel-drive system, it’s suited toward tackling inclement weather rather than off-roading. Around turns, the SQ5 is nimble and more enjoyable to drive than its body style suggests.
The 2016 SQ5 comes with plenty of technology features as standard, such as keyless start, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, an SD card slot with 32GB capacity, Bluetooth, four 12-volt power outlets and a HomeLink garage door opener. Available technology features include navigation, a Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker sound system, a blind-spot warning system, four driving modes, a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors.
