The BMW M4 is the performance version of the automaker’s 4 Series model. The rear-wheel-drive M4 blends the best of BMW luxury and quality with track-worthy performance.
The 2016 BMW M4 is a compact luxury performance coupe or convertible with room for four. It comes in a lone trim, but packages and standalone options are available to ramp up feature content.
For 2016, the M4 adds keyless entry, satellite radio and a Harman Kardon audio system to its list of standard features.
The M4 builds on the sporty design language of the 4 Series, delivering larger fenders and an aluminum hood. The convertible features a retractable hard-top roof that folds into the trunk within 20 seconds.
A distinct body kit — including larger air inlets up front, side skirting, a trunk lip spoiler and a diffuser with quad exhaust tips — gives the M4 a muscular stance. Xenon headlights are standard, and all models come with 18-inch alloy wheels set within performance tires. Adaptive LED headlights and 19- or 20-inch wheels are available.
Both the coupe and convertible offer comfortable and roomy seats up front, with the expected support for ambitious driving. Not surprisingly, the rear seat is tight for two adults and better suited for youngsters.
The driver-oriented cockpit features large, clear instrument panel dials and a logically ordered center display. Between the front seats are the transmission shifter and an oversized iDrive dial. The interior is swathed in leather with carbon-fiber trim available with the upgraded sport seats.
Standard equipment includes heated 10-way power-operated front seats with lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a tilt-and-telescoping steering column. Available equipment includes a heated steering wheel and a power rear sunshade for the coupe.
Under the hood of the M4 is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that packs 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It comes paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The 2016 M4 sports a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds (4.1 seconds with the automatic), and it’s available with a Competition package that increases horsepower and brings a 0.1-second improvement in its 0-60 mph times. Its top speed is 155 mph. This model makes an EPA-estimated 17/26 mpg city/highway with the manual and 17/24 with the automatic transmission.
A special-edition M4 GTS edition also is available, delivering 493 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. This model uses innovative water-injection technology to achieve its added boost. Only 300 copies can be found in the United States.
The M4 is equipped with an 8.8-inch center display screen with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and auxiliary audio ports, and a suite of apps under the BMW ConnectedDrive umbrella. A 16-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system includes satellite radio, HD Radio and a CD player.
The Executive package brings in a rearview camera, a head-up display and front and rear parking sensors. Enhanced smartphone connectivity is a standalone option. Active safety features such as automated parallel parking assist, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and frontal-collision mitigation with automatic braking are available.
