The 2016 Infiniti QX50 isn’t a newcomer in the field, and it’s certainly not the most practical. However, this luxury compact SUV offers athletic handling and an abundance of power that’s unusual for the class. The QX50 has some new tricks up its sleeve, too, including a longer wheelbase and additional standard features.
The Infiniti QX50 is a luxury compact SUV that’s offered in one trim level. A V6 engine, seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available as an option. For 2016, the QX50 gains updated exterior styling and a stretched wheelbase that translates into a more spacious back seat. There are a few additional standard features too, including a sunroof and heated front seats.
The QX50 is one of the older models in the Infiniti lineup. It hasn’t gone through a full redesign since it debuted for 2008 (then known as the Infiniti EX35). That means the exterior is pretty recognizable and may lack the “wow factor” that recently redesigned competitors provide. Still, Infiniti has made a number of updates for 2016 in an effort to keep the QX50 competitive.
The biggest news is that the QX50 went through a growth spurt for 2016 with a wheelbase that’s now 3.2 inches longer than the outgoing model. The difference is subtle, especially since the QX50 has always struck me as more wagonlike than much of the competition, but the stretched dimensions translate into more interior space and a ride that might be a little more compliant.
A few exterior styling updates also debut for 2016, including new front and rear bumpers, as well as LED daytime running lights and sideview mirrors with integrated turn signals. The base model comes with 18-inch wheels, though our test QX50 featured the available 19-inch wheels that come as part of the Deluxe Touring package.
The QX50’s cabin features premium materials and a simple design that’s attractive but starting to show its age. The center stack in particular should be familiar to anyone acquainted with the brand. A 7-inch display sits at the top of the stack, with corresponding buttons for navigation and vehicle settings directly below it.
The front seats are heated and power-adjustable, making it easy to find a comfortable driving position. A sunroof and leather upholstery also come standard, but the big news for 2016 is the additional rear-seat legroom that the newly stretched wheelbase provides. When compared with the 2015 model, Infiniti says there’s an additional 4.3 inches of legroom and 3.9 inches of knee room in the back seat. At 6-foot-1, I found the back seat comfortable, and it seems spacious enough for two adult passengers to stretch out.
Cargo-carrying capability has never been the QX50’s strongest suit. There’s 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which isn’t much space for a compact crossover. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is standard, while available power-folding rear seats are available as part of the Deluxe Touring package.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about the 2016 Infiniti QX50 is the way it drives. Quick steering and nimble handling make the QX50 a crossover that behaves more like a sports sedan than a luxury compact SUV.
There’s a lot of power on tap, too. While a number of competitors have made the jump to smaller turbocharged engines, the QX50 has a 3.7-liter V6 that provides 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Power comes on quickly, with impressive off-the-line acceleration and plenty in reserve for passing and merging. The V6 is complemented by a seven-speed automatic transmission that responds immediately, but still operates smoothly enough to please buyers in the luxury segment.
The only real downside is fuel economy. At an EPA estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway, the rear-wheel drive QX50 uses more fuel than competitors like the Acura RDX, Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Fortunately, the all-wheel drive QX50 gets the same estimates as its rear-wheel drive counterpart.
The 2016 QX50 comes standard with a USB port, Bluetooth phone connectivity, satellite radio, proximity key, push-button start and a 7-inch color display. Optional features are primarily bundled into packages, and can include items like a Bose audio system and a voice-activated navigation system.
The QX50’s tech features are starting to get a little outdated. In particular, the small color display and buttons on the center stack should be familiar to anyone who’s been in an Infiniti product within the last five or six years. However, the infotainment system deserves praise for its quick response times and user-friendly on-screen menus. Most primary functions are also easily accessed with redundant knobs or buttons on the center stack, making quick adjustments while driving easy.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not crash tested the 2016 Infiniti QX50. Partial testing has been conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with the QX50 earning top scores of Good for the moderate overlap front crash test and testing for the head restraints and seats. When equipped with forward collision warning, the IIHS gave the QX50 an Advanced rating for front crash prevention.
The 2016 Infiniti QX50 comes standard with a rearview camera, anti-lock brakes and a suite of air bags. An available Technology package adds driver-assistance features that include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring. Infiniti’s Around View Monitor is also available, providing a 360-degree view around the QX50 to ease parking maneuvers.
With a base price of $34,450, the 2016 Infiniti QX50 is one of the least expensive models in the segment. Selecting all-wheel drive adds an additional $1,400 to the bottom line.
Our test QX50 was a fully loaded all-wheel drive model that included the Technology package ($2,750), Deluxe Touring package ($2,400), Premium package ($500), Premium Plus package ($2,000) and illuminated kick plates ($440). After a $995 destination charge, our QX50 carried an MSRP of $44,935.
While Infiniti only offers one trim level, you cannot pick and choose your option packages at will. With the exception of the Around View Monitor, all of the QX50’s desirable driver assistance features are part of the Technology package, which sits at the top tier and requires you to purchase all of the other bundles as a prerequisite.
If you are OK with skipping those features, our recommendation would be a QX50 with the Premium and Premium Plus packages, which will include items like a Bose audio system, navigation and the Around View monitor. An all-wheel drive model with these options should carry an MSRP of just under $40,000 (including destination).
The Infiniti QX50 isn’t for everyone. It doesn’t offer the cargo space that many luxury crossovers provide, and its fuel economy isn’t a strong suit either. Still, for those of us that enjoy driving, the QX50 may be one of the most rewarding compact SUVs in the segment. Nimble handling and a powerful V6 make the QX50 one of the more dynamic entries in the class, and the addition of more back-seat space improves its everyday usability. Add in its low cost of entry and the QX50 succeeds as a compelling alternative for buyers that want a sports sedan, but need a little extra utility.
