Looking at the luxury sedan market, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLA stands out for several reasons. It is fuel efficient for its class, offers lots of great technology options and provides a fun driving experience.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA is a four-door luxury sedan which is available as the entry-level CLA250 and upgraded AMG CLA45 trim levels. Front-wheel drive is standard on the base trim and all-wheel drive is optional. The AMG CLA45 has all-wheel drive standard. Both trims are powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
For 2016, the Mercedes CLA250 gains a newly available adaptive suspension system, as well as adjustable thigh-support extensions for the driver and front-passenger seats. Meanwhile, the AMG CLA45 gets a revised transmission with new gear ratios. It also gets a performance boost, with 20 more horsepower than the outgoing 2015 model.
The CLA’s exterior features a dynamic combination of sculpted sheet metal and a low coupe-like stance. Bold character lines trace the sides back to the flaring taillights. In the front, a wide grille gives it the characteristic look of a Mercedes-Benz.
Standard exterior features include LED taillamps, 17-inch wheels and run-flat tires. Upgrades include 18- or 19-inch wheels, a chrome grille, black gloss exterior accents and a panoramic sunroof.
The CLA’s interior is a sanctuary from the outside world, with many elegant features and sharp attention to detail. It offers a fair amount of space in the front seats, though the rear seats are a bit tight. However, the CLA compensates by making the cabin more pleasant with unique features like ambient lighting. In terms of cargo space, the CLA offers 13.1 cubic feet.
Standard features inside include synthetic leather upholstery, anthracite trim, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control and a driver’s seat with memory settings. Upgrades include heated front seats, a passenger-side memory seating system and a genuine leather interior.
The CLA’s small size and responsive engine make the driving experience fun. The CLA250 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. The all-wheel-drive AMG CLA45 features a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo that delivers 375 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. With both models, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is standard.
The CLA250 gets an EPA-estimated 26/37 mpg city/highway, while the more powerful AMG CLA45 delivers 23/30 mpg.
The base CLA250 comes with standard tech features that are expected in this segment, including a telematics system (MBrace2), Bluetooth, a USB port, and Mercedes’ Comand infotainment system with a 7-inch display. Optional features include satellite radio, navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system and keyless entry/ignition.
Available driver-assistance features include a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and front and rear parking sensors.
"I LOVE this car. If I had to find a negative it is the lack of ease in figuring out the GPS. Easier to go with Google Play. Great on mileage and a fun car to drive." Read Less
