If your heart wants a thrilling sports car, but your mind dictates you get a vehicle with more passenger and cargo capacity than the typical two-door roadster, the 2016 Porsche Panamera is the car for you. The Panamera packages the finely honed performance the Porsche brand is known for in a practical hatchback-sedan configuration. It all coalesces to create a transportation solution offering razor-sharp handling, roomy accommodations and a thoroughly luxurious driving experience.
For 2016, a couple of new trims join the Panamera lineup. The Edition trim is one of the model’s most affordable choices, and it features unique styling. The Exclusive Series trim is the costliest in the roster, and it offers artisanal details and unique customization opportunities.
Porsche’s Panamera seats four and is available with various powertrains. Choices range from a turbocharged V8 to a plug-in hybrid. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on certain trims.
The Panamera is offered in 14 trims: base, Edition, 4, 4 Edition, S, 4S, S E-Hybrid, GTS, Turbo, Turbo S, 4S Executive, Turbo Executive, Turbo S Executive and Exclusive Series. Note that the Exclusive Series trim has very limited production. All Executive models ride on an extended wheelbase.
The 2016 Panamera bears many design cues that instantly mark it as a Porsche. Standard teardrop-shaped bi-xenon headlights cast their beams from above a body-colored bumper. A side view reveals the robust standard 18-inch wheels that keep the Panamera glued to the pavement. In back, tapered headlights flank a standard power liftgate.
Base models provide LED daytime running lights, a sunroof and power-folding, auto-dimming mirrors. Upgrades include quad exhaust tips, chrome window surrounds and a roof rack.
The Panamera’s cabin contains many items that look old-world and exquisitely handcrafted, but the environment is also completely modern. The interior is spacious – especially in the extended-wheelbase Executive models – but with just two seats in back, the Panamera seats just four passengers. Most models offer 15.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity, but plug-in hybrids see this number dip to 11.8 cubic feet.
With the base Panamera, you get standard features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, heated front seats, partial leather upholstery and a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback. The list of available features includes full leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering wheel, heated rear seats and a refrigerated rear compartment for keeping beverages and other items chilled.
Not surprisingly, performance is one of the Porsche Panamera’s high points. Rear-wheel drive dominates the lineup, but GTS, Turbo, Turbo S and all trims with 4 in their descriptors come standard with all-wheel drive.
All models are governed by a seven-speed automated manual transmission except for the hybrid, which gets an eight-speed automatic.
Six powertrains are offered. Base, Edition, 4 and 4 Edition models come with a 3.6-liter V6 generating 310 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Panamera S, 4S and 4S Executive models feature a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that provides 420 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque.
GTS models are motivated by a 4.8-liter V8 good for 440 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Turbo and Turbo Executive models feature a turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 offering 520 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Turbo S, Turbo S Executive and Exclusive Series models are motivated by a turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 good for 570 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.
The Panamera S E-Hybrid models feature a supercharged V6 paired with an electric motor for total output of 416 horsepower.
Base models are rated by the EPA at 18/28 mpg city highway. Turbo S Executive models are rated 15/24 mpg.
The base 2016 Porsche Panamera offers standard technology features such as a navigation system, a 7-inch touch screen, satellite radio, HD radio, an 11-speaker sound system and Bluetooth. Upgrades include adaptive cruise control, a rear-seat entertainment system, a 360-degree surround-view camera and a premium audio system.
