A high-end sports car with a high-tech hybrid powertrain, the 2017 Acura NSX delivers the performance and looks of an exotic supercar, but it’s backed by the reliability that drivers expect from Honda’s premium brand.
The NSX is available only as a coupe and in only one well-equipped trim level, and all cars feature a hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged V6 engine and three electric motors. Acura also provides numerous wheel and color choices to fine-tune the NSX, along with carbon-fiber interior and exterior option packages.
The 2017 model is the all-new second-generation edition of the NSX that went on sale in the summer of 2016. The original NSX was in production from 1990 to 2005.
The shape of the 2017 NSX is streamlined and aerodynamic, right down to its flush-mounted door handles that only pop out on an as-needed basis. Highlighting the sides of the car are large air intakes that are located just behind the doors, while Acura’s Jewel Eye LED headlights are complemented by LED daytime running lights and LED taillights. A standard body-color decklid spoiler or an available carbon-fiber unit supply the appropriate finishing touch. The 2017 NSX — which is some 6 inches shorter in length than the Acura ILX compact luxury sedan — rides on staggered wheels, with 19-inch wheels in front and 20-inch wheels at the rear.
The Acura NSX has an upscale, driver-focused cabin with room for two, plus a small rear trunk that can fit 4.4 cubic feet of cargo, which is slightly less space than the Mazda Miata offers. Four color themes are offered for the interior as well, as are a standard leather-wrapped steering wheels and leather trim for the door panels and instrument panel. Heated seats trimmed in perforated leather and Alcantara trim are standard, while full leather seating is optional. Acura also ensured impressive outward visibility, thanks to interior design elements like a compact instrument cluster, a low dashboard and specially engineered A-pillars made from ultra-high-strength steel.
The hybrid powertrain for the 2017 Acura NSX makes a total of 573 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque from four sources: a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 and an electric motor that drive the rear wheels, plus individual electric motors for each front wheel. That output is managed by a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to enable a top speed of 191 mph. Further, Acura promises an all-around high-performance driving experience with features such as Brembo brakes and the latest version of its Super Handling All-Wheel Drive technology. EPA ratings for the 2017 NSX are set at 21/22 mpg city/highway.
Standard tech content for the NSX includes a 7-inch infotainment touch screen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming. Additionally, there’s a standard rearview camera with dynamic gridlines, along with keyless access with push-button start.
Audio comes from a standard eight-speaker sound system. A standard AcuraLink system can add resources like cloud-based navigation and access to concierge services. Integrated, satellite-linked navigation also is offered as part of a dedicated Technology package that also brings in a 580-watt ELS surround-sound audio system, Acura HD Digital Traffic, front and rear parking sensors and more.
