Alfa Romeo’s 4C uses its lightweight package to maximum effect, and the end result is truly exhilarating performance. However, while the 4C is thrilling on the track, its stiff ride can feel harsh on daily commutes.
The 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C is a mid-engined two-seat sports car sold in coupe and convertible body styles, and both styles are offered in a single trim. Rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine are standard.
For 2017, additional wheel designs, an Akrapovic dual-mode electronically controlled exhaust system and a carbon-fiber roof join the 4C’s lineup of available features.
The 4C’s exterior features luscious curves, a muscular hood, side vents, a pronounced rear haunch and oversized circular tail lamps. Every detail is carefully executed, ensuring a unified presentation that’s a standout on city streets. The differences between the coupe and convertible come down to the roof: a removable hardtop for the former and a removable, stowable cloth roof for the latter.
Standard features include body-colored door handles, a capless fuel-fill system, automatic halogen projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights and power-adjustable side mirrors. Available upgrades include xenon headlights and a body-colored rear deck-mounted spoiler, and coupes may be equipped with a carbon-fiber roof.
Base models come with staggered 17-inch front wheels and 18-inch rear wheels. Eighteen-inch front wheels and 19-inch rear wheels are optional.
As is the case with some performance-focused sports cars, the 4C comes up short in the area of comfort. The car’s low stance hampers easy ingress and egress, and the cabin’s legroom is tight. Both the coupe and convertible provide a meager 3.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Standard equipment includes a leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminum pedals, air conditioning and black cloth seats. Leather upholstery is available.
The 4C is skilled at providing visceral thrills on winding mountain roads or at the track, and it truly is a purpose-built performance machine. However, its firm ride quality can feel jarring in everyday driving. All models come with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Under the hood, there’s a turbocharged 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine good for 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s the sole engine choice for both the coupe and convertible. Brembo brakes and a sport-tuned suspension are standard, and the 4C is available with a Track package that includes an upgraded racing suspension and performance-tuned shock absorbers.
Alfa Romeo’s 4C has an EPA rating of 24/34 mpg city/highway.
With the 4C, you get a streamlined selection of technology features. Base models come with USB connectivity, an Alpine sound system, a CD/MP3 player, Bluetooth phone and audio, satellite radio, HD radio and a 7-inch driver information display.
The list of upgrades includes rear parking sensors and an upgraded sound system with a subwoofer.
