As the flagship of its marque’s car lineup, the 2017 Audi A8 shows off an exquisitely detailed cabin. Both natural materials and advanced technology are on display, and you can enjoy spacious, comfortable seating in the back as well as the front. You’ll probably prefer the driver’s seat, though, because the A8 is as fun to drive as it is fancy.
The 2017 Audi A8 is a full-size luxury sedan that seats five. This year’s edition is a long-wheelbase A8 L model. A separate model, the high-performance 2017 Audi S8, sits on the regular-length A8 wheelbase. There are two trim levels: the A8 L 3.0T and the A8 L 4.0T Sport. The first has a supercharged six-cylinder engine, and the second has a turbocharged V8. Each is matched with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard. The A8 competes with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Two new wheel packages and a black accent package become optional for the 2017 A8.
Large, rectangular headlights and an almost SUV-like grille put a bold face on the A8. Sculpted sheet metal flows back from that point, with strong body lines that make the 17-foot A8 look even longer. The result is the sleek appearance of an automotive cruise missile.
The A8 comes with LED headlights, a power sunroof, power soft-closing doors, a hands-free trunk, heated power-folding mirrors and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. With the optional Black Optic package, you get dark accents for the grille, front bumper, rear fascia, mirror caps, taillight lenses and exhaust outlets. Audi also provides options such as a panoramic sunroof and 20- and 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
A layered dashboard gives the 2017 A8 a chance to feature different materials and surfaces in the cabin. All of them work together to create a wide, welcoming feel. Audi designers also introduced eye-catching details such as trapezoid-shaped climate vents and a shift lever that resembles the head of an elegant walking stick. The A8’s long wheelbase means you get even more legroom in the rear seats than in the front. The A8 supplies 14.2 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk.
Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, heated 18-way power-adjustable front seats, four-zone automatic climate control, wood trim, power rear sunshades, cruise control and a multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. The A8 is available with diamond-stitched premium leather upholstery, 22-way power-adjustable climate-controlled massaging seats, power-adjustable climate-controlled massage-function outboard rear seats and additional wood trim choices.
The Audi A8 L 3.0T relies on a standard supercharged 3.0-liter V6. That engine delivers 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, which lets you drive from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. The A8 L 4.0 T Sport is quicker yet. It upgrades to a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces 450 horsepower and 444 pound-feet of torque. With that output, the A8 can dash from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Both trims are pretty nimble considering their size.
An eight-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and Audi’s Drive Select multimode drive system are standard with both engines, while the Dynamic package can add a sport differential and sport-tuned steering.
The A8 can achieve fuel economy ratings of 19/29 mpg city/highway with its supercharged V6.
The 2017 Audi A8 supplies standard technology such as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, a navigation system, a 7-inch infotainment display, a console-mounted touchpad controller with handwriting recognition, Bluetooth, HD Radio and a 14-speaker Bose audio system with 630 watts of power. Infotainment options include night vision, a head-up display, a dual-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with 1,400 watts of power.
A rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors are standard for driver assistance. The A8 also is available with a Driver Assistance package that bundles adaptive cruise control, automatic forward emergency braking, automatic high beams, forward collision warning and lane keeping assistance. A surround-view camera system is optional as well.
