The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace is an all-new model and Jaguar’s first-ever SUV. The F-Pace offers a stunning exterior design that’s only bested by its stellar performance. Supercharged V6 and turbodiesel four-cylinder engine options are available to motivate this all-wheel drive crossover with authority.
The Jaguar F-Pace is a new compact luxury SUV that seats five. Two engines are offered, including a turbodiesel four-cylinder and a supercharged V6. All-wheel drive is standard, and every F-Pace is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission with a manual shifting mode.
Jaguar’s first SUV is available in six different trim levels: base, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, S and First Edition. The top two trims benefit from a more powerful version of the supercharged V6, while the F-Pace First Edition is a limited run with only 275 copies slated for sale in the U.S.
Inspired by Jaguar’s beautiful F-Type coupe, the F-Pace unequivocally proves the British carmaker can build a vehicle that offers superb utility without sacrificing the brand’s reputation for aesthetics. The aggressive styling features a pronounced hood bulge, a wildly oversized grille and broad rear haunches. The slick design creates the illusion of motion, and Jaguar’s tasteful details (such as the optional LED headlamps that feature J-Blade daytime running lights) convey upstream movement.
The F-Pace’s architecture works to enhance performance and fuel economy. It’s built largely with aluminum components that are lighter and more rigid than traditional steel. Exterior features include standard 18-inch alloy wheels (the options list includes wheels as large as 22 inches), satin-black window surrounds and chrome side power vents.
All trim levels include heated and power-adjustable sideview mirrors, automatic headlamps, a sliding panoramic roof and a power tailgate. Options include auto-dimming sideview mirrors, fog lights and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
The F-Pace’s cabin reflects this SUV’s luxurious and sporty nature. The leatherette upholstery is soft and inviting, and it appears to be long-wearing and resilient to rips and stains. The driver-oriented cockpit is the centerpiece of the F-Pace’s roomy cabin. An eight-way power-adjustable seat is standard, and finding a comfortable seating position is quick and easy.
The overall fit and finish of the 2017 F-Pace is exceptional. The highly refined cabin is exactly what you’d expect from a company that has been building vehicles since the 1920s.
The center-console-mounted shift knob is perfectly located, and important features like drive mode control are centrally situated. A push-button parking brake helps free up real estate in the cabin.
The rear seat can comfortably accommodate up to three adults. An optional recline feature allows rear-seat passengers to adjust the seatback angle, helping stave off exhaustion during longer road trips. Cargo capacity is impressive, and 33.5 cubic feet of room is available with the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat in place. With the seat folded, cargo capacity expands to 61.4 cubic feet.
Comfort is one of this SUV’s strengths. Long trips pass without fatigue not only for the driver, but for passengers as well.
The F-Pace is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 providing 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful version of this V6 is also available, offering 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine providing 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque. All F-Pace models feature all-wheel drive and use an eight-speed automatic transmission with a manual shifting mode.
Both V6 choices provide plenty of muscle, giving Jaguar’s new crossover the power to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5.5 seconds. The F-Pace’s all-wheel-drive and steering systems work with the rigid chassis to provide optimal handling and stellar overall driving dynamics.
Fuel economy is mediocre for a luxury compact crossover, although the F-Pace’s power helps explain the shortcoming. V6 models earn 18/23 mpg city/highway.
Driving the all-new F-Pace is an exhilarating experience. The precise steering, nearly perfect suspension and powerful engine add up to a crossover that feels like a sports car. Body roll is at a minimum, which allows the F-Pace to be driven aggressively with little drama.
The only downside is that the smooth exhaust note only comes alive when pushed, and at the expense of fuel economy.
Jaguar’s new 2017 F-Pace includes a high level of standard technology features. The InControl Touch multimedia system includes an easy-to-read 8-inch touch screen. While InControl Touch may not have the lightning-fast response times you’ll find on some competing systems, it works well and is a notable improvement over previous Jaguar infotainment systems.
A powerful Meridian sound system with 11 speakers is also standard fare. The audio system sounds fantastic and offers HD Radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The base model also features dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless access and push-button start.
Available equipment includes an InControl Touch Pro system with a 10.2-inch touch screen and navigation. A head-up display, a 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster, Wi-Fi and more are available. One useful optional feature is the waterproof Activity Key. Worn around the wrist as a bracelet, this key allows you to lock the key fob in the vehicle when you’re enjoying a day at the beach.
The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace comes with a full complement of air bags, child seat anchors, antilock brakes and traction and stability control. The standard features list also includes InControl Protect, an amenity that contacts emergency service providers in a critical situation.
Like most luxury crossovers, the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace can be configured with driver-assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and a driver drowsiness monitor. The optional head-up display projects important vehicle information on the windshield, allowing the driver to stay focused on the road at all times.
The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace starts at $41,985, including a $995 destination charge. The base F-Pace is powered by the 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine and arrives with a host of standard features. The same base model powered by the 340-horsepower supercharged V6 starts at $43,385 including destination.
Moving to the F-Pace Premium adds 19-inch alloy wheels, memory settings for the driver’s seat, a rearview camera and more for $45,195.
The top-trim F-Pace First Edition starts at $70,695, including destination. The First Edition model is a limited trim that represents all that is possible for the F-Pace. Standard equipment includes the aforementioned active safety systems, leather seating, 22-inch wheels and much more.
The 2017 Jaguar F-Pace is a luxury compact crossover that’s been tailored for the enthusiast. The entire package represents one of the finest and most enjoyable SUVs on the market. If you’re considering the Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 or Acura RDX, we would encourage you to also consider the 2017 F-Pace.
Rarely does a new vehicle grab and hold our attention the way the all-new 2017 Jaguar F-Pace has. This SUV’s balanced chassis, finely tuned suspension, precise steering and robust powertrain approach perfection. Though it’s better than previous versions, Jaguar’s infotainment system feels a bit dated and could use some improvement. Still, we wouldn’t let this minor quibble stand in the way of a purchase.
With the 2017 F-Pace, Jaguar proves it can build more than great coupes and sedans. The F-Pace is on its way to becoming the new segment benchmark.
