Combining luxury, comfort and performance, the 2017 Jaguar XF is a true sports sedan. Attractive styling sets the XF apart, but excellent driving dynamics are what make the XF special.
The 2017 Jaguar XF is a five-passenger midsize luxury sedan. Rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard, and all-wheel drive is available. Buyers can choose from base, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport and S trim levels.
For 2017, the Jaguar has added a new turbodiesel power plant to the XF lineup. The new engine offers excellent torque and up to 42 mpg.
The 2017 Jaguar XF features a lightweight, aluminum-intensive body structure. The exterior reflects Jaguar’s recent design language, and it features fluid lines and graceful proportions.
The base XF features 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, automatic xenon headlights and LED rear lights. Moving to the Premium adds power-folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors. The Prestige features 19-inch alloy wheels.
The R-Sport model adds a body kit that includes a sport-themed front bumper, side sills and a trunk-mounted spoiler. The S features 20-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and gloss-black and satin chrome accents.
The XF’s interior elevates simplicity and refinement over flash. Pressing the start button triggers a choreographed rising of the shift knob and air vents. The gauge cluster and infotainment system welcome you with proud Jaguar logos as the engine roars to life. Jaguar’s choice of materials is excellent, and the XF’s fit and finish is exemplary.
Front-row passengers sit in power-adjustable seats that easily configure to provide the perfect seating position. The leather-wrapped steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and the driver’s controls are within reach and intuitive.
Rear-seat passengers will find comfort in the XF’s roomy second row. Head- and legroom are plentiful, and three adults will find the back row spacious enough for short commutes.
Prestige models enhance the luxury quotient with heated front seats and leather upholstery. R-Sport models receive an enthusiast-themed interior with R-Sport badging throughout.
Cargo space is excellent. The XF provides an impressive 19.1 cubic feet of trunk volume. This capacity beats that of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (13.1 cubic feet) and Audi A6 (14.1 cubic feet) by a significant margin and matches that of the BMW 5 Series (18.7 cubic feet).
Standard features include dual-zone climate control, leatherette upholstery and power-adjustable front seats.
Options include a heated steering wheel, front sport seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, four-zone climate control, manual rear side-window sun blinds and an electric rear-windshield sun blind.
The base Jaguar XF is powered by a new 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. The base engine produces 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar also offers a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that’s tuned to deliver 332 pound-feet of torque and either 340 or 380 horsepower. All XF models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel-drive is available throughout the lineup.
Fuel economy is excellent with the base turbodiesel engine. EPA ratings for the rear-wheel-drive XF are 31/42 mpg city/highway, and all-wheel-drive models achieve 30/40 mpg. The supercharged V6 models are rated at up to 20/29 mpg and only lose a single mpg on the highway with the all-wheel-drive system (20/28 mpg).
The XF is a true sports sedan with equal parts comfort and performance. Whether cruising down a winding road or darting along a deserted freeway, the XF’s precise steering and finely tuned suspension rise to the occasion. User-selectable driving modes give the XF slightly different personalities, although these differences aren’t as notable as they are in Jaguar’s purpose-built sports cars.
While we haven’t spent any time behind the wheel of the turbodiesel, both variants of the supercharged V6 provide excellent acceleration and near-instantaneous throttle response. Braking is excellent, even in panic-stop situations.
The base XF arrives with an impressive list of standard technology equipment. The premium Meridian sound system is controlled by an 8-inch color touch screen. All models come with Bluetooth connectivity and HD radio. The audio system sounds great, although our test vehicle’s audio would occasionally stop and need to be reset. A call to Jaguar suggested that a software update would resolve the problem. Other than the glitch, the XF’s system was fairly intuitive and operated as expected.
The base XF can be optioned to include navigation, satellite radio and a host of apps. Higher trim levels can be equipped with a $3,200 Technology package that includes a 12.3-inch full digital instrument panel, a 10.2-inch center touch-screen infotainment system, navigation and an 825-watt Meridian surround sound system.
The 2017 Jaguar XF Premium comes standard with a rearview camera. The lineup of available safety features includes lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and forward collision warning with automatic braking.
Pricing for the base turbodiesel-powered 2017 Jaguar XF starts at $48,250, not including the $995 destination charge. The base pricing represents strong value in the segment, especially when you consider the high level of standard features found on the XF and the vehicle’s excellent fuel economy. Adding all-wheel drive bumps the price to $51,250. Comparable base models from BMW and Mercedes-Benz have higher starting prices.
V6 models start at $51,290 ($53,350 for all-wheel drive). Again, the basic XF models provide plenty of comfort, luxury and performance for a relatively inexpensive price and are likely to fit the needs of most buyers who are looking for a comfortable luxury sedan that is also fun to drive.
Our review vehicle, the top-trim XF S with all-wheel drive, starts at $66,200, and our test car’s final sticker price was $67,195. Although a good jump from the XF’s base pricing, the well-equipped XF S is still priced below much of the competition. The powerful supercharged engine adds to the S model’s appeal, and the all-wheel drive is great for less-than-optimal weather conditions.
While not as flashy as some of the competition inside or out, the 2017 Jaguar XF is an affordable and well-balanced contender in the highly competitive midsize luxury sedan segment. Commuters will enjoy the XF’s predictable ride and comfortable amenities, while weekend enthusiasts will find the XF’s strong engines and balanced chassis provide plenty of driving excitement.
