The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE delivers all the luxury shoppers expect from this storied German brand. The GLE also provides an athletic engine range and a long list of technology features.
Mercedes-Benz’s GLE is a midsize crossover SUV that competes in the luxury segment, and it seats five passengers. It’s offered with a variety of gas-only powertrains, and it’s also sold as a plug-in hybrid. Buyers can choose from several trim levels: 350, 400, 550e (a plug-in hybrid), AMG 43, AMG 63 and AMG 63 S. The AMG 43 joined the roster midway through the model year, replacing the 400. The GLE gives buyers a choice of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. This model is also offered as the GLE Coupe, which features a more rakish design and a bit less cargo space. The GLE Coupe comes in AMG GLE43 and AMG GLE63 S trims.
For the 2017 model year, the GLE adds the AMG 43 trim level to its lineup. Also, last year’s diesel powertrain has been dropped.
The GLE’s exterior design gives this crossover a solid, powerful look. In front, wide headlights slope upward alongside a shield-like grille. Deep character lines on the hood and side panels add dimension and muscularity, and the rear fascia is home to a blocky grille and a tall hatch.
Base models come with rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated power-folding side mirrors, an auto-dimming driver-side exterior mirror, LED daytime running lights, a power liftgate, LED taillights, a sunroof and 19-inch alloy wheels. The range of optional features includes 20- or 21-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, unique AMG exterior accents, a panoramic sunroof, aluminum running boards and soft-close doors.
Inside its cabin, the GLE looks plush and vaguely retro. The center stack features a floating touch screen and lots of buttons and knobs. Both rows of seats are comfortable and supportive, with ample legroom for passengers. With its rear seats in place, the GLE provides 38.2 cubic feet of cargo space. This expands to 80.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. In comparison, the GLE Coupe offers 23 cubic feet of space behind its rear seats and a maximum of 60.7 cubic feet.
The GLE’s list of standard interior features includes heated power-adjustable front seats, 60/40-split folding rear seats, a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering column, dual-zone automatic climate control and simulated leather upholstery. Optional equipment includes a rear-seat center-armrest pass-through, multicolor ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, three-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats with a massage function, heated rear outboard seats and Nappa leather upholstery.
The GLE delivers a smooth ride quality on most surfaces, and it’s available with optional engines that pack some punch. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. GLE400 and AMG GLE43 models come with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while all other trims feature a seven-speed automatic.
Five gas-only powertrains are offered. The base GLE350 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 good for 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The GLE400 gets a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The AMG GLE43 gets an enhanced version of this engine, and it generates 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque.
The most powerful engines are found in the AMG GLE63 and GLE63 S. Both trims feature a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8. It produces 550 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque in the AMG GLE63, and 577 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque in the AMG GLE63 S. Fuel-economy with the model’s gas-only powertrains tops out at 18/23 mpg city/highway.
There’s also a single hybrid powertrain available that delivers 436 horsepower. The GLE550e plug-in hybrid can travel for up to 12 miles using just electric power, and it achieves mileage of 43 MPGe with the electric motor in use. With the gas engine in play, mileage comes in at 21 mpg.
This Mercedes-Benz crossover can tow up to 7,200 pounds.
Mercedes-Benz has armed the GLE with lots of tech wizardry. Base models come with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, two USB ports, a rearview camera and an eight-speaker sound system.
The range of options includes a blind-spot warning system, lane-keeping assist, satellite radio, navigation, an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, a surround-view camera, a rear-seat entertainment system, a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo, adaptive cruise control, a self-parking system and a collision avoidance system.
