Most subcompact models offer tiny interiors, but the 2017 Nissan Versa provides a very spacious cabin. The Versa also impresses with a large trunk and superb fuel economy.
The 2017 Nissan Versa is a sedan that seats five passengers, and it’s sold in S, S Plus, SV, SV Special Edition and SL grades. Front-wheel drive and a four-cylinder engine are standard. A hatchback variant—the Versa Note—is available, and it’s reviewed separately.
The Versa’s SV Special Edition trim is new for 2017.
The 2017 Versa bears a strong resemblance to other vehicles in the Nissan family, starting with its distinctive chrome-accented grille. Large headlights dominate the front fascia, while the car’s profile reveals a blunt hood and sloping roofline. Base models connect with the tarmac via 15-inch wheels.
The Versa’s list of standard features includes halogen headlights, power-adjustable side mirrors and black exterior door handles. Optional features include 16-inch wheels, fog lights, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, chrome exterior door handles and a rear spoiler with an integrated LED brake light.
The Versa provides an agreeable cabin, and this Nissan’s interior delivers a level of spaciousness that’s not typical for cars in the subcompact segment. The rear seat is especially roomy, and it’s an accommodating perch even for those with longer limbs. The Versa also provides a large trunk that’s good for 14.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Base models come with air conditioning, a tilt-adjustable steering column, cloth upholstery and a driver’s seat with four-way manual adjustment. Available features include 60/40-split folding rear seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, upgraded cloth upholstery, a driver’s seat with six-way manual adjustment and power windows and door locks.
Though its engine can get raucous when pushed, the Versa makes up for this by providing ride quality that’s exceptionally forgiving. Even on rough road surfaces, the sedan’s suspension keeps harshness at bay.
All models come with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine the generates 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque. The base sedan is the only model with a standard five-speed manual transmission and available four-speed automatic. All other trims come standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
The Versa achieves mileage of 31/39 mpg city/highway with the continuously variable transmission. Versa sedans equipped with the manual transmission have an EPA rating of 27/36 mpg, and models with the four-speed automatic are rated at 26/35 mpg.
The Versa comes with the technology features you’d expect from a car in its price range. Base models are equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, a CD/MP3 player, a four-speaker sound system and an auxiliary input jack.
Available technology features include navigation, keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera, handsfree text messaging, a USB port, Bluetooth streaming audio, satellite radio, a 5-inch color display and a 5.5-inch touch-screen monitor.
"Smooth ride. Doesn't have much get up and go. And mine had a recall issue. Not major however. Great gas mileage. I get above recorded value for gas mileage. Put snow tires on it and the thing is a tank. Very reliable. "
