Conventional electric cars aren’t the only choice for those seeking zero-emissions transportation. The 2017 Toyota Mirai is a midsize hydrogen fuel cell sedan that blends hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity. During the process, only water vapor is emitted.
The Mirai, unchanged for the 2017 model year, seats four passengers. It comes in a single trim, and there are no options. The Mirai is sold only in California. All Mirai sedans are front-wheel drive with a single-speed transmission. They can travel for 312 miles between fill-ups.
The Mirai’s sheet metal is just as futuristic as its fuel cell technology. With its slim upper grille and a vast lower grille structure, the front fascia has a strong, square-jawed countenance. In profile, the car’s belt line rises dramatically. Sweeping character lines mirror its ascent. The Mirai’s standard 17-inch wheels are set within muscular, sculpted fenders.
All models come with touch-sensor door handles, heated power-adjustable side mirrors and automatic LED headlights. Standard wide-angle fog lights add dramatic flair.
Wide door openings allow easy access to the Mirai’s cabin. Inside, there’s an asymmetrical center stack and a dash with lines that echo the bold look of its exterior. The cabin is spacious, with good legroom for passengers in both rows. The trunk provides 12.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
The Mirai’s standard interior amenities include a heated steering wheel, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, eight-way power-adjustable heated seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. Simulated leather upholstery is used throughout.
Swift power delivery is one of the Mirai’s strengths. It offers good pickup off the line. Still, it’s not as quick as some of the electric cars that it likely will be cross-shopped against.
The Mirai’s fuel cell system boasts a fuel cell stack, a 113-kW electric motor, a battery and two hydrogen storage tanks. The car’s electric motor provides output of 151 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. That helps the Mirai dash from 0-60 mph in 9 seconds.
The Mirai takes just five minutes to refuel. Hydrogen fueling stations are still pretty limited, however. Most are in California.
Mileage for the Mirai comes in at 67 MPGe combined.
The Mirai comes with a decent assortment of technology features. A JBL sound system is standard, along with navigation and an Entune app suite. There’s also Bluetooth phone and audio streaming on board.
The Mirai’s list of standard driver-assistive technology includes blind-spot warning, forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.
