Exotic in every sense of the word, the 2018 Audi R8 delivers breathtaking, world-class performance. And unlike some of its rivals, the R8 is also comfortable enough to serve as an appealing daily driver.
The Audi R8 is a mid-engine high-performance sports car that seats two passengers. Coupe and convertible body styles are offered. All models come with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Convertibles are sold in a single base trim, while coupes come in base and Plus trims.
For 2018, the R8 adds Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration as standard equipment. Also, laser-assisted LED headlights are now offered as an option.
Audi’s R8 makes a sharp and modern statement from all angles. In front, a dramatic open-mouthed grille is nestled between slim, sloping headlights. The car looks muscular in profile, and it sits close to the ground. The side panels feature a striking two-piece silver sideblade.
Base models come with automatic LED headlights, LED taillights, rear fog lights, heated power-folding side mirrors with auto-dimming capability, 19-inch wheels, twin-trapezoidal exhaust outlets and an adaptive rear spoiler that extends when the car hits speeds of 75 mph. Convertibles are equipped with a folding soft top. The R8’s list of exterior upgrades includes laser-assisted LED headlights, black exterior accents, a carbon-fiber engine cover and 20-inch wheels.
With its graphic design cues, the R8’s cabin matches the contemporary look of its sheet metal. The seats will be snug for larger drivers, but visibility is good. Relative to other two-seat sports cars, the R8’s cabin offers decent levels of roominess and comfort. Coupes provide 8 cubic feet of cargo space, while convertibles deliver 4 cubic feet of space for your belongings.
Base models come with automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Nappa leather upholstery and heated front seats with 18-way power adjustability. Upgrades include extended leather on the dash and door panels, contrast stitching and carbon-fiber interior accents. The performance-oriented Plus model comes with racing shell seats that allow you to adjust the height but not the backrest angle.
The R8 is as thrilling as you’d expect a top-flight sports car to be, and it provides this excitement without sacrificing comfortable ride quality. On all models, gears are shifted by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and standard all-wheel drive provides extra traction.
Base models come with a 5.2-liter V10 good for 540 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. Plus models boost this engine’s output to 610 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, enabling the R8 to hustle from a standstill to 60 mph in a scant 3.2 seconds. Performance upgrades such as ceramic brakes and dynamic steering are offered, and Plus models come with a more stiffly tuned suspension.
EPA ratings for the 2018 R8 come in at up to 14/25 mpg city/highway.
Audi’s R8 offers a decent lineup of technology features, but driver-assistive features such as blind-spot warning and forward collision mitigation are conspicuously absent. Base models come with navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, a touch screen with handwriting-recognition technology, HD radio, satellite radio, keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, front and rear parking sensors, a Wi-Fi hot spot and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.
To reduce weight, the Plus trim comes with a five-speaker stereo.
