Fitting into the four-rings lineup between the 2018 Audi A7 and higher-performing RS 7, the 2018 Audi S7 hits the sweet spot in its segment with V8 power, premium luxury and a wide range of advanced technologies. True, those technologies don’t include the company’s latest virtual instrument cluster/infotainment display, but then again, neither do the S7’s rivals.
As for who those rivals are, the 2018 Audi S7 competes against other midsize premium sport sedans with its liftback body style, a four-seat cabin and Premium Plus and Prestige trims. In each case, a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.
Audi also introduced new tire-and-wheel combinations for the S7 this year.
The S7 brings additional sporty details to the streamlined shape of the A7, starting with front and rear fascias designed specifically for S-model cars, plus side sills to match. Further distinguishing the S7 are twin-blade grille bars in Audi’s distinctive “Aluminum optic” trim, which accent the exterior mirrors, too. Other notable exterior style cues range from the circular design elements for the front intakes to quad exhaust outlets at the rear.
Standard content for the Premium Plus trim includes all-LED exterior lighting, right down to integrated LED turn signals for the standard power-folding and heated exterior mirrors. A sunroof is also standard as well, as are upscale touches such as a handsfree trunk, an adaptive rear spoiler, heated windshield-washer nozzles and 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Top exterior options for the S7 are alternative 20- and 21-inch wheel designs and two option packages, one with sporty upgrades and one with high-gloss black accents.
Full of intricate details and premium materials, the S7’s cabin also represents an evolution of the setup for the A7. The dashboard is particularly eye-catching, and it benefits from flowing horizontal shapes and standard wraparound birch-wood trim for a wide, welcoming feel. That’s emphasized in the rear seats, too: just like in the A7, the back row is made up of two individual seats for improved comfort. But for impressive interior versatility, those seats do have a 60/40 split-folding configuration, and the S7’s liftback layout enables 24.5 cubic feet of storage behind that row; Audi doesn’t publish cargo specs with the rear seats folded, but it’s no doubt even more extensive.
The 2018 Audi S7 also features a handsomely equipped interior with standard equipment like diamond-stitch leather seating surfaces, a heated front row with 12-way power adjustability, leather-wrapped door-panel armrests, four-zone automatic climate control and a multi-function sport-style steering wheel on a power-adjustable column. Shoppers who prefer higher levels of luxury can order ventilated front seats with massage function, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel to complement the S7’s standard features. Multiple interior color themes and inlays are available for extra personalization potential.
Though not as explosive as the RS 7, the S7 will satisfy most enthusiasts with a standard adaptive air suspension and a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine that produces 450 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. As mentioned, that output is managed by a seven-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to all four wheels. Audi also offers a performance-enhancing upgrade package with a dynamic steering system, a sport-tuned rear differential and a sport exhaust system.
In terms of fuel economy, the S7 earned grades of 16/24 mpg city/highway with the EPA.
Technology is a strong suit for the 2018 Audi S7, especially when it comes to connectivity resources. Now, a rearview camera, parking sensors, lane-change assistance and rear collision preparation are all standard for driver assistance, but the car goes all-in for infotainment. Included are a standard freestanding infotainment screen, a console-mounted control interface with handwriting recognition, mobile Wi-Fi, navigation, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM Satellite and HD Radio services and a 14-speaker Bose audio system.
For the Prestige trim, a corner-view camera system and a head-up display are among the standard driver-assistance technologies, and a night-vision system and safety package are optional for either trim. It bundles adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, automatic high beams and a pre-collision system with automatic emergency braking. An important infotainment option, only available in the Prestige trim, is a 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system with 15 speakers.
