The world of electric vehicles includes plug-in hybrid models, such as the 2018 Chevrolet Volt. Now in its second generation, the Volt is no longer a novelty, as it delivers the comfort of a compact model and the efficiency of an electric vehicle.
The 2018 Chevrolet Volt is a front-wheel-drive, five-door hatchback that seats five passengers. Chevrolet offers the Volt in LT and Premier trims. Its power comes from an electric motor and a 1.5-liter range-extending four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
For 2018, the Chevy Volt receives three new exterior colors and a vinyl steering wheel and shift knob on the base model. An LT Driver Confidence Package with driver-assist features also is new.
The Volt delivers a tidy layout with a long hood and a short rear deck. Beyond the badging, it doesn’t have obvious signs of being a hybrid, although its swoopy design, dramatically rising beltline and falling roofline demonstrate that this isn’t some ordinary model, setting it apart from the similar-sized Chevrolet Cruze. The front fascia has a narrow upper grille and a much larger lower air intake. The rear has wraparound tail lamps and a spoiler that crosses the center of the hatchback.
Standard equipment includes LED headlamps, daytime running lights and tail lamps, power-adjustable side mirrors and 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. Upgrades include automatic headlamps, a black-trim package, heated side mirrors and upgraded wheels.
Although Chevrolet says the Volt seats five, the rear seat is narrow and most useful and comfortable for two individuals, not three. The cabin offers a sleek dashboard, but without the futuristic look of some models, such as the Toyota Prius. The subdued layout extends to the door panels and center console. Cargo space is just 10.6 cubic feet, but capacity more than doubles with the 60/40 split folding rear seat down.
The base Chevrolet Volt comes with air conditioning, power windows and door locks, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column and cloth seats. Available equipment includes power front seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats and leather-wrapped seats.
The Chevrolet Volt runs on electric-only power for up to 53 miles. When the battery is discharged, a 1.5-liter range extender engine kicks in, extending the overall driving range to 420 miles. Battery replenishment comes by means of the included charging cord or by connecting to a public charging station. Unlike pure electric vehicles, the Volt doesn’t require electricity to run, thereby eliminating range anxiety.
The electric powertrain generates 149 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. The 2018 Volt makes an EPA-estimated 42 mpg.
The technology-driven Chevy Volt comes with an 8-inch touch screen center display, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, OnStar guidance, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot for connecting up to seven devices, two USB ports and auxiliary audio input. The Volt also includes Chevrolet MyLink telematics, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming. Optional equipment includes an 8-speaker Bose audio system.
All models have a rearview camera. Available driver-assist technology includes side blind-zone alert with lane-change alert, lane-keep assist, forward-collision alert, forward automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
