With a hybrid powertrain and a versatile cabin, the 2018 Ford C-Max is a practical choice for customers on the go. It even offers a hands-free liftgate. The C-Max also has a competitive range of infotainment technology. Some newer rivals provide higher EPA ratings and more safety content, however.
As for who those rivals are, that’s a little tricky. The C-Max has the basic size and shape of a tall subcompact hatchback. But only a few other vehicles with those dimensions have a hybrid powertrain. Regardless, two trim levels are available. The SE is the entry model, and it’s joined by the C-Max Titanium. To complement the car’s high-efficiency power source, front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are standard in both trims.
All content for the C-Max carries over for 2018 unchanged.
The 2018 Ford C-Max is two inches longer and six inches taller than a 2018 Ford Focus hatchback. Yet the C-Max still has a relatively sporty profile. That’s because of design cues such as a long, sharply angled windshield. A multi-level grille and trapezoidal foglight pockets also add detail to the front end.
So do the standard halogen headlights, which are accented by standard LED signature lighting and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The standard exterior mirrors for the C-Max have integrated turn signals and blind-spot mirrors. Customers can order the C-Max with a few key upgrades, too. Beyond the hands-free tailgate mentioned above, these include a fixed-glass moonroof, heated exterior mirrors with approach lights and specific 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels for the Titanium trim.
A complicated, multi-piece dashboard design stands out in the C-Max cabin. Particularly eye-catching is the prominent infotainment pod rising out of the top of the dash. As for other stylish details, the trim around the gearshift console flows up between the different levels of the dashboard. In the back row, 60/40-split folding seats are standard. They allow owners to expand the rear cargo capacity from 24.5 to 52.6 cubic feet. This means the C-Max can supply 26 percent more cargo space behind the rear seats than a 2018 Kia Niro. (Although the Niro has about two more cubic feet of total cargo space.)
Given its segment, the C-Max comes with a relatively impressive level of standard content. Highlights include a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. Ford also offers popular upgrades such as leather-trimmed seats and a heated front row.
The 2018 Ford C-Max features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 141 horsepower and 129 pound-feet of torque. The car’s electric motor and lithium-ion battery then add a boost of electric power, for a total of 188 horsepower. The Niro, by contrast, has a combined 139 horsepower. Getting back to the C-Max, front-wheel drive and a CVT also are standard.
The C-Max earns EPA ratings of 42/38 mpg city/highway. The Niro comes in at 51/46 mpg city/highway.
A rearview camera and Ford’s previous-generation infotainment system are standard. That latter technology includes a 4.2-inch display, Bluetooth, access to mobile apps, smartphone-based automatic crash notification and six audio speakers.
The list of available technology for the C-Max is fairly basic as well. Automatic parking assistance is a notable option, but other upgrades here are limited to a blind-spot system, rear cross-traffic alert and front parking sensors. There are more infotainment options for the C-Max, though. These range from a nine-speaker Sony audio system to the latest Blue Oval infotainment setup. It can supply an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and navigation. HD Radio and satellite radio services also are in the mix.
