Capable enough for the job site, the 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD also is comfortable enough as a daily driver. It offers much of the key safety and infotainment technology available in the popular 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup. Like many GMC models, the Sierra 2500HD also features its share of high-end luxury content.
The Sierra 2500HD is a heavy-duty pickup with three available cab styles. The larger cabs can fit up to six occupants. For 2018, the truck is offered in Sierra, SLE, SLT and Sierra Denali trims. The standard powertrain for the Sierra 2500HD combines rear-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional.
Important updates for 2018 nclude more content for the entry trim, which gets a rearview camera and a more sophisticated infotainment system.
Taking the traditional pickup approach to design, the Sierra 2500HD has a massive vertical grille up front and a high, strongly sculpted hood. Diesel-powered models add an aggressive hood scoop. The truck shows off GMC’s angular wheel arches. Additionally, along with the three cab styles mentioned above, the Sierra 2500HD provides two bed lengths.
The 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD comes standard with high-intensity discharge headlamps set off by LED signature lighting. Other standard content includes manually adjustable exterior mirrors and 17-inch painted steel wheels. To create a more upscale look, customers can turn to the truck’s list of options. It’s highlighted by a wide selection of aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof and premium exterior mirrors. For example, the top-of-the-line power-folding trailer mirrors are power adjustable and have integrated turn signals. Denali models and All Terrain packages supply their own dedicated design themes.
The 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD provides an attractive and functional interior. The dashboard also features gentle contours along the top for the instrument cluster hood, the infotainment screen and the climate vents. In terms of cabin dimensions, the Sierra 2500HD is a match for the full-size, light-duty Sierra 1500. That means up to 40.5 inches of rear-seat legroom. The 2018 Chevrolet Impala full-size sedan has 39.8 inches.
As for standard content in the Sierra 2500HD, it’s typical of an entry-level pickup. With that in mind, manual windows are standard, and the standard steering wheel does not have audio controls. It does have a tilt-and-telescoping column. Also standard are air conditioning, power door locks, vinyl upholstery and a 40/20/40 front bench seat. The Sierra 2500HD offers plenty of premium options, too. Customers can order the truck with leather surfaces, power-adjustable pedals, dual-zone automatic climate control and a heated multi-function steering wheel wrapped in hand-stitched leather. The Denali trim features 12-way power-adjustable front bucket seats with heat and ventilation.
The Sierra 2500HD comfortably satisfies owner demand for power with two engines. The standard 6.0-liter V8 produces 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. For maximum output, you can try the 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine. This V8 can deliver 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. It also enables a tow rating of up to 18,100 pounds. The maximum trailer rating for the light-duty 2018 GMC Sierra is 12,500 pounds.
Note that the EPA does not publish fuel-economy ratings for heavy-duty pickups such as the 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD.
Thanks to the upgrades for the 2018 model year, the Sierra 2500HD now has a standard rearview camera and a 7-inch touch-screen display. The standard infotainment system further bundles Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and six audio speakers.
Important driver-assistance technology is available as well. These include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and front and rear parking sensors. An optional driver’s-seat system can build on those features. It can vibrate to indicate the direction of a potentially unseen vehicle. As for the premium infotainment system, that’s anchored by an 8-inch touch screen. This setup also can be complemented by navigation, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, HD Radio, satellite radio services, a rear-seat entertainment system, Bose audio and wireless charging.
