Although it can’t offer the same luxury and technology as segment leaders, the 2018 Lexus IS can still stand out from the crowd. First, the IS wears the brand’s eye-catching “spindle” grille as part of an athletic design. Then, there’s the standard rear-wheel-drive powertrain and extensive safety bundle.
The IS competes in the compact premium sedan segment. It offers seating for five and two trim levels: IS 300 and IS 350. Rear-wheel drive is standard for both, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission. Customers can order either trim with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to a new name for the entry model, there are other changes for 2018, such as more horsepower and a standard rearview camera. New options include a Torsen limited-slip differential and adaptive front lighting.
The 2018 Lexus IS makes an immediate impression with its dramatic front-end appearance. But it’s not just the car’s grille that gets your attention. The face of the IS shows large lower intakes and L-shaped signature lighting. To bring a sporty touch to the flanks of the IS, a rising line flows back from the car’s rockers and through the rear wheels. Finally, for the most athletic styling, the available F Sport package provides its own specific upgrades.
Standard equipment for the IS includes LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, a power moonroof and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The Lexus is a little light on exterior options. Top choices are adaptive front lighting, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers and heated exterior mirrors that tilt down for improved visibility in reverse. Missing here, but available with rivals such as the Audi A4, is a hands-free trunk.
The cabin of the IS relies on a dual-cockpit approach up front, where a long, wide center console flows up into the car’s center stack, capped off by a deeply recessed infotainment screen. Strong horizontal lines frame the climate vents for a nice visual contrast. The hood over the instrument panel extends to the button for the car’s ignition system for another attractive detail. The IS comes with standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats and 10.1 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk.
As for standard content, the 2018 Lexus IS has synthetic-leather surfaces, 10-way power-adjustable front sport seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. Real leather seats are not available for the IS, but other upscale touches are. These include heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable steering column, and F Sport upgrades.
The standard powertrain for the 2018 Lexus IS 300 is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. In the IS 350, a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 is standard. This engine makes 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.
The F Sport package increases performance in all models by adding content such as a sport-tuned suspension. For rear-wheel-drive F Sport models, a Torsen limited-slip differential is standard.
EPA ratings for the IS top out at 22/32 mpg city/highway.
In the end, the IS is more powerful but less efficient than the entry-level, front-wheel-drive A4, which can achieve 27/37 mpg city/highway. The Audi also has the edge in high-end performance with the S4. The most athletic version of the A4 checks in with 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
The 2018 Lexus IS outpaces competitors in standard safety features, offering forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control and a rearview camera. An app-based navigation feature also is standard, as are a 7-inch screen, a console-mounted controller, Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio services and eight audio speakers.
In terms of safety options, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors are available. Integrated navigation with a 10.3-inch screen, along with a Mark Levinson audio system with 835 watts of power, are popular options as well.
