The Mercedes-Benz SL combines a classy interior with a great deal of power, all without being overtly sporty. Though it might be a bit more comfort-tuned than competing sports cars, the SL offers plenty of power and a luxurious cabin
The Mercedes SL is a two-seat luxury convertible that comes in four trims: SL 450 and SL 550, as well as the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 and AMG SL 65. Each trim offers a unique powertrain configuration, starting with a twin-turbo V6 in the SL 450. All models feature an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.
A backup camera and puddle lamps that project the SL’s logo become standard for 2018. Smaller updates include seatbelts that are now offered in silver or red.
The Mercedes-Benz SL stands out with a stunning, sleek exterior and a power-retractable hardtop. Its polished appearance is bolstered by a pronounced front fascia, while a side view reveals dramatic vents that are accented by two rising character lines.
The SL’s hardtop can be raised and lowered while driving at speeds below 25 mph. Standard exterior features include 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights and a panoramic roof. Options include upscale touches like matte exterior colors and soft-close doors.
Luxury is at the heart of the SL’s interior. As a two-seat roadster, the Mercedes SL does a good job of keeping up with the competition with its opulent, high-quality interior. The trunk has a useful 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the top up. However, lowering the top and cargo room shrinks to 8.5 cubic feet.
The SL comes equipped with 16-way power-adjustable heated seats with memory, as well as dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a cooled glove box. Upgrades include a Nappa leather interior, ventilated seats and even massaging driver and passenger seats.
Expect a healthy balance between power and comfort in the Mercedes SL. Though it is capable of a lot of power, the SL doesn’t flaunt it, and its handling is a bit more comfort-tuned than most sports cars. An adaptive suspension system (Active Body Control) is an available upgrade, helping to smooth out the ride a bit more.
The base SL 450 features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine with an impressive 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The SL 550 comes with a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 that provides 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard with both of these models.
As expected, AMG models offer a significant increase in power. The AMG SL 63 comes with twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that delivers 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Opt for the top-of-the-line AMG SL 65, and you’ll get a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 that generates 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard with the AMG SL 63 and the AMG SL 65.
Fuel economy is good for the class, with the SL 450 delivering an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway.
The base Mercedes SL 450 offers standard features that include Bluetooth, USB ports, navigation, speech-to-text capabilities, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, keyless entry and ignition and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. Standard driver-assistance technology includes a backup camera, front and rear parking sensors and forward collision warning with automatic braking.
