The newest addition in Nissan’s lineup, the 2018 Kicks offers excellent fuel economy, a roomy cargo area and an array of infotainment and safety features. Buyers seeking brisk acceleration and all-wheel drive might want to look elsewhere, however.
The 2018 Nissan Kicks comes in three trims: S, SV and SR. A four-cylinder engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is the only option.
The Nissan Kicks is an all-new vehicle for 2018.
The 2018 Nissan Kicks builds on the quirky styling of its predecessor, the Nissan Juke. Its athletic and adventurous design elements include boomerang headlamps, the marque’s “V-Motion” grille. There’s also a floating roof with a “wrap-around visor” appearance to the windshield and side glass panels, much like a pair of its stablemates, the 2018 Nissan Murano and Maxima. The Kicks allows vast customization opportunities with seven exterior colors and five two-tone combinations. You also can customize colors on the door sill plates, wheels, spoiler, lower door accents and rear hatch, just to name a few.
Standard features include 16-inch steel wheels, roof rails and automatic headlights. The SV rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. Moving up to the trim-topping SR brings amenities such as LED headlights and foglights, heated mirrors and a rear roof spoiler.
The cabin of the 2018 Kicks takes a minimalist approach, unlike the sheet metal, but that’s not a bad thing. The front seats are plenty comfortable, and an armrest on the driver’s seat is a welcome feature. Even though the Kicks technically seats five, the rear seats are more suited for two adults or three young children. Cargo capacity is an impressive 25.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and that measure expands to 53.1 with the 60/40-split rear seats folded down.
Base models include air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. The SV offers chrome accents, automatic climate control and a cargo cover. Upgraded cloth upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel come in the SR. Simulated leather upholstery and heated front seats are optional for the SR.
Under the hood of the 2018 Nissan Kicks is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 125 horsepower and 115 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated with a CVT. All models are front-wheel drive.
Fuel economy tops out at 31/36 mpg city/highway. That’s impressive for the segment.
The four-cylinder engine isn’t very powerful, even by subcompact standards. That means that the Kicks is probably best for city dwellers, who undoubtedly will benefit from its small footprint. Its steering is precise and responsive. For a crossover of its size, the Kicks provides a pretty smooth ride, even on rough roads. The lack of all-wheel drive is a disappointing omission.
The 2018 Kicks comes with a generous array of infotainment and safety features. Standard in base models are a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker stereo system, a rearview camera, a trio of USB ports, hill start assist and forward collision warning. Higher trims bring in a blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, satellite radio and a surround-view camera system. An eight-speaker Bose sound system is optional.
