Best known for its value, the 2018 Nissan Versa offers a number of key standard features. Air conditioning, Bluetooth for hands-free calling and a multi-function steering wheel all are on board in the entry trim. A Versa with more capabilities can be ordered, although the car’s primary appeal is for shoppers focused on price.
The Versa is a subcompact sedan with seating for five and three trims: S, S Plus and SV. Front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission are standard, with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) standard for the upper trims. (Reviewed separately is the 2018 Nissan Versa Note subcompact hatchback.)
Nissan trimmed the Versa lineup for 2018 but added standard items such as adjustable front headrests and variable intermittent windshield wipers.
The 2018 Nissan Versa is smooth and aerodynamic on the outside, and it relies on some of the same aggressive design language up front as the newer cars in the brand. Large headlights and front-side windows, as well as dramatic rear roof pillars, add to the sleek effect. For a stylish finishing touch, the Versa’s wrap-around taillights flow backward to frame the car’s trunk.
Standard content for the Versa includes multi-reflector halogen headlights, 15-inch covered steel wheels, chrome grille accents and power-adjustable exterior mirrors. Among its popular upgrades, the Versa can be ordered with fog lights, 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, chrome exterior door handles and a rear spoiler.
The cabin of the Versa is basic but attractive, thanks in part to a shield-shaped steering-wheel hub and a vertically oriented center stack set off by metal-look trim pieces. A long curve connects the outboard climate vents along the top of the dash. Other eye-catching details include oval pods to hold the interior door-release levers. A relatively large interior is another highlight for the Versa, which has 5.8 more inches of rear-seat legroom than a Ford Fiesta. The Versa’s trunk capacity of 14.9 cubic feet is larger than for the Ford Focus, which is in the next size class up. Finally, in the Versa SV, the rear seats have a standard 60/40 split-folding function for extra versatility.
Showing the car’s emphasis on value are standard features such as cloth upholstery, four-way manually adjustable front seats and manual windows and locks. Among the interior options for the Versa are premium cloth seating surfaces, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The Versa is configured with a standard 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque, which leaves it trailing rivals like the Chevrolet Sonic (138 horsepower/125 pound-feet of torque).
The top benefit for the Versa’s engine is an EPA line of 31/39 mpg city/highway with a CVT, representing a 6/5 mpg advantage over the Sonic (with its entry engine and conventional automatic transmission).
Again, keeping in mind the low MSRP for the Versa, standard technologies include Bluetooth and an AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA audio system with an auxiliary input and four speakers.
A rearview camera is available, as are a five-inch audio-system display screen, an iPod-compatible USB port and a hands-free text-messaging assistant.
