The Porsche 718 Boxster is a stylish and incredibly capable sports car that allows drivers to enjoy sunny weather. While it’s the most affordable convertible in the automaker’s lineup, there’s nothing entry level about it. With its mid-engine layout, incredible driving characteristics and peppy engine, the Boxster emphasizes driving pleasure.
The 2018 Porsche 718 Boxster is a two-door convertible with seating for up to two passengers. The sporty convertible is available in two models: the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four that is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The S trim is powered by a larger 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four also matched with a six-speed manual gearbox. A seven-speed automatic transmission is available for both models, with power going to the rear wheels.
After arriving as an all-new model last year, the 2018 Boxster has minimal changes.
Styling for the 718 Boxster is modeled after the brand’s highly successful 550 Spyder. That gives the modern convertible a little bit of a retro feel. Despite being a convertible, the sports car has a sleek and compact look that features stunning curves. The curvy front end doesn’t have any chiseled lines or massive air intakes — it’s good-looking without being outrageous. It’s the same situation at the back, as muscular fenders and a modest spoiler help keep things tidy.
The 718 Boxster comes with 18-inch wheels, an automatically extending rear spoiler, bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights, LED auxiliary lights, LED taillights and a brushed stainless steel central tailpipe as standard. Optional features include 19- and 20-inch wheels in various designs, LED headlights, power-folding exterior mirrors, a sport exhaust system, ceramic composite brakes and a SportDesign package.
The seating position in the 718 Boxster is ideal for spirited driving. Drivers find themselves low in the vehicle, while the seats are supportive and comfortable. The three-spoke steering wheel is nicely sized, while the gauges are easy to read and put a precedent on critical information. There’s a plethora of high-end materials in the cabin, and the minimalistic design brings out the interior’s sleek design. The mid-engine layout provides consumers with two usable trunks, which account for a total of 9.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
Standard interior features include climate control, sport seats, a sport steering wheel and cruise control. Optional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated seats, 18-way adaptive sport seats with memory and ambient LED lighting.
Performance is the 718 Boxster’s strong suit. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a quick-shifting seven-speed gearbox is available. The 718 Boxster S is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four that produces 350 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque. The Boxster S has the same transmission options as the standard convertible.
Fuel efficiency tops out at 22/29 mpg city/highway. In terms of high-performance convertibles, that’s toward the top of the list.
With its mid-engine layout, the Boxster is more than just quick in a straight line; it provides incredible handling. On the flip side, the convertible also has a smooth ride when not traveling at high speeds.
The 718 Boxster comes with a good amount of tech features. Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, two USB slots, an 11 GB internal jukebox storage and a six-speaker audio system. Optional features include navigation, a 4G LTE module, Apple CarPlay compatibility, a Burmester 12-speaker surround sound system, a wireless signal booster and keyless entry and ignition.
Standard on the Boxster are a reversing camera and front and rear park assist. The convertible can be fitted with the latest driver assistance features, which include adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, a blind-spot monitor, forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking.
