The 2018 Toyota Prius stands out as one of the country’s most fuel-efficient new cars. But that’s just a starting point for the Prius. It’s also relatively roomy, with a versatile rear cargo hold. And like many Toyota vehicles, the Prius comes standard with multiple high-tech safety measures. The latest Android Auto/Apple CarPlay features aren’t available for the car, however.
The Prius provides many of the other benefits of a compact hatchback, including room for five in the cabin. In terms of trim levels, Toyota offers the Prius One, Prius Two, Prius Two Eco, Prius Three, Prius Three Touring, Prius Four and Prius Four Touring. All Prii are configured with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). (We look at the 2018 Toyota Prius Prime, a plug-in hybrid, separately.)

To support its focus on fuel economy, the 2018 Toyota Prius touts a highly aerodynamic design. But there’s also detailed sculpting to accent the car’s silhouette. That’s especially noticeable up front. Here, the Prius has large, intricate headlight shapes and sharp creases for its foglight pockets. Another prominent character line flows back from the front-door handles into the Prius’ rear spoiler.
LED headlights, daytime running lights, taillights and stop lights all are standard. The Prius also provides heated exterior mirrors and 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. In the higher grades, the Prius offers foglights, LED accent lights, a moonroof and alternative 15- and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Two-tone bumpers and Touring-specific rear bumpers are available as well.
The cabin of the Prius is highlighted by a futuristic wrap-around dashboard. It has a symmetric layout that moves the driver’s instrument cluster to the top center of the dash. Below that, Toyota designers place a hexagonal setting for the infotainment screen. A free-floating console for the car’s toggle-like gear selector completes the center stack. For handling typical daily errands, the Prius features a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat and 24.6 cubic feet of rear storage. That compares to the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback’s 22.7 cubic feet. (Toyota doesn’t publish cargo ratings for the Prius with its rear seat folded.)
Standard equipment for the 2018 Toyota Prius includes fabric-covered seats, a six-way adjustable driver’s chair and a multi-function steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. The Prius comes standard with a high-tech climate system, too. This can tell which seats are occupied in the Prius and save its energy for keeping those positions most comfortable. Customers can upgrade the Prius with synthetic-leather seating surfaces, a heated front row and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Synthetic leather also can wrap the steering wheel and soft-touch cabin surfaces. Some rivals, again including the Cruze, offer real leather along with heat for the steering wheel and outboard rear positions.
The 2018 Toyota Prius combines a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a standard nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The result is 121 horsepower overall from the car’s hybrid powertrain. As mentioned above, all Prius models rely on front-wheel drive and a CVT.
A lithium-ion battery pack is standard for all models above the entry trim.
Although all Prius trims have EPA ratings of at least 50 mpg in each testing category, the Prius Eco models set the pace. They have fuel-economy grades of 58/53 mpg city/ highway.
The Prius has a further advantage with its standard safety technology. The standard setup bundles adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, pedestrian detection and a rearview camera. Meanwhile, the standard infotainment system features a 6.1-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, an iPod-compatible USB port and six audio speakers.
Customers can order the Prius with more safety technology. This ranges from a blind-spot monitor to rear cross-traffic alert to a head-up display. Finally, wireless charging and two uplevel infotainment setups are on the options menu. With the range-topper, customers enjoy an 11.6-inch display, navigation, access to mobile apps, HD Radio, SiriusXM services and a JBL sound system with 10 high-efficiency speakers.
